The Bouncing Souls - East Side Mags

Artist: The Bouncing Souls

Song: East Side Mags

Album: Bouncing Souls (1997)

The Bouncing Souls are a punk rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey, formed in 1987. By the time of their acknowledgment by the national punk rock scene, they had reignited a "pogo" element to New Jersey punk rock by playing fast light-hearted songs, a model followed by various other local bands.

The Bouncing Souls is the 3rd full-length album and first release on Epitaph Records for the New Jersey punk band, The Bouncing Souls. It contains such fan favorites as "Kate Is Great" and "East Coast Fuck You!".

review

Ride! Ride! Ride!....
comin' out through the park
past the dog run smell of shit
burning in the sun
watch the cab dent his door
happy hour here let's pick up jorge
lock 'em up three cold beers in a cup

Inside Coney something ain't right

i can't see straight in the flashing lights
i got a feeling there's gonna be a fight
wrap it up, pack it up saddle up
full tank of liqour in our guts

Drinkem down we gotta a ride
going through the lower east side
day or night mags on the run
looking for trouble
looking for fun
BMX we got suss
when we ride don't mess with us

review

If i had money i'd buy a new BMX it's a long walk through the city in the rain it's along walk from train to train. We'll build a ramp and do some tricks and try to impress some chicks then we'll put on some really dark shades and run over all the dorks with rollerblades... crossups, tabletops, endos, curb endos, timmy judge! get rad! if i had money i'd buy a new BMX.

review

I'll sing this song to my bike and everything else that I like
this goes out to my handlbars
As I'm weaving through the cars.
This is for my squirrels in the park and every dog that doesn't bark.
This is a song about a ride and listening to whats inside,
I look at all the cars I pass
I cruise myself in the glass

The Trucks - Old Bikes

Artist: The Trucks

Song: Old Bikes

Album: The Trucks (2006)

Electro funk / Pop / Punk from Bellingham, US

music

let's go out for a ride,
pedal on our old bikes
short or far, i don't care,
ride with you, anywhere

and if i go too fast
and it seems i might crash-
pray for me.
pray for me.

pedal pedal chain and metal
we went riding with the devil
pedal pedal chain and metal
we went riding with the devil

blood and concrete don't mix
two black eyes i can't fix
is this a concussion,
or is this confusion.

whiskey on my lips,
scars on both my hips-
is this a concussion
or is this confusion.

pedal pedal chain and metal
we went riding with the devil!

Desperate Bicycles - Cars

Artist: Desperate Bicycles

Song: Cars (7”) (1978)

The Desperate Bicycles were an English punk group who released a series of independent recordings in the late 1970s and inspired many other bands to do likewise. The Desperate Bicycles pioneered the do-it-yourself ethic of punk, adopting a proselytising role exemplified by their ardent exhortation: "it was easy, it was cheap - go and do it!". The group have been described as "DIY's most fervent evangelists"

The music of the Desperate Bicycles has been described as: “Spindly, fuzzy, guttural guitars through puny amplifiers, reedy, wheezy organs, out of tune electric pianos, cardboard box drums and monotonous declamatory yet somehow utterly reasonable sounding vocals”. Another reviewer described them as “a shambling wreck of a psychedelic post-punk band”. The writer Simon Reynolds states that the group's music "was almost puritan in its unadorned simplicity, its guitar sound frugal to the point of emaciation".

Zegota is an American hardcore punk and post-hardcore band originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, formed in 1997.

My space

NO! Pedal away from global decay
Every pedal strikes a blow for freedom
Every pedal strikes a blow against global decay What will we sacrifice?
What will we sacrifice for life and land?
When will we understand that we're responsible for the environment?
What will we justify?
Making way for you...
It's not your fault Don't know what else to do...
Taking the prescribed path, you'll have to wreck your life It's not our fault, we had to wreck our lives We wreck our lives.

Lucky 7 - California Girl

Artist: Lucky 7

Song: California Girl

Album: Lucky 7 (2002)

Lucky 7 was an American pop punk band from San Diego, California. They formed in 1997 and the next year independently released their first record, titled "Miss Fortune". After touring with bands such as Goo Goo Dolls, New Found Glory, Something Corporate, and Allister, along with immense internet buzz created by their high download rate at MP3.com, Lucky 7 signed with Shock Records/Omega Records, where they released their self-titled label-debut in 2002. The group disbanded in 2003. (wikipedia) (Allmusic)

This is one of the best CDs I have heard in a long time. Their punk-pop mix is driven and catchy, but it never gets old and it always sounds fresh. And I just think it's cool because my friend Brad had never heard of them (And he thinks he's so much more underground than I am!) I heard of them on MP3.com and got hooked, and the minute I saw the CD I felt the compulsion to buy it. The ol' instincts were right of course...Lucky 7 is greatness in the making!

"Crammed with more hot singles than an Ibiza dance club... Face the World, an obvious radio smash in wait."

(Intro)
You know dat girl in school?
(Yeah) She so fine and sooo mine!
Well..ok!

(Verse 1)
I met her at the dock
I couldn’t break the lock
On her bicycle
But that’s ok
We walked home anyway
(We don’t need a bike!)

(Chorus)
Who?
California Girl
What?
California Girl
Where?
California Girl
Why?
California Girl
When?
California Girl

Who, What, Where, Why, When?
MAN! That girl is fine!
Bump..(5x) What?

(Verse 2)
Check it out yall
To the beat yall
Jump up and touch your stinky feet yall

(Chorus)
Who?
California Girl
What?
California Girl
Where?
California Girl
Why?
California Girl
When?
California Girl

(Verse 3)
Say what? She mine! I know she always blows my mind!
Say what? She mine! I know she always blows my mind!
Say what? She mine! I know she always blows my mind!

Desperate Bicycles - The Medium Was Tedium

Artist: Desperate Bicycles

Song: The Medium Was Tedium (7”) (1977)

Formed in Dalston East London during March 1977, the Desperate Bicycles were one of the first bands to seriously aspire to the DIY recording ethic that punk had sent into overdrive. They took one stage further Mark Perry's 3 chord call to action and showed groups could have total artistic control. A concept later taken up by bands like Crass.

This is the second single.

The drummer and guitarist had left the band soon after the recording of the "Smokescreen" single, with the drummer being replaced by Dave Papworth, then aged 14 years. The new line-up went back to the studio in June 1977 and recorded another two songs, "The Medium was Tedium" and "Don't Back the Front". The second single was released in February 1978 in a pressing of 1,000 and sold out in a week. "The Medium was Tedium" incorporates "it was easy, it was cheap - go and do it!" as a refrain, urging others to follow the band’s example. "Don't Back the Front" contains the lines: "cut it, press it, distribute it / Xerox music's here at last". For the Desperate Bicycles 'do-it-yourself' "meant the overthrow of the establishment music industry through people seizing the means of production, making their own entertainment, and selling it to other creative and autonomous spirits". With the profit from their second single the group pressed a further 2,500 copies of each of their singles, and also purchased some more equipment

Desperate Bicycles - Handlebars

Artist: Desperate Bicycles
Song: Handlebars (7”) (1977)

Desperate bicycles

In March 1977 the Desperate Bicycles booked a studio at Dalston in East London to record their first single. The band possessed only an amp and a bass-guitar and the studio supplied the other instruments and equipment; "with a lot of courage and a little rehearsal" they recorded two songs, “Smokescreen” and “Handlebars”. The first record was released in August 1977 as an edition of 500 pressings on the band’s own Refill Records label. The records cost £153 to produce, which comprised the three hours studio time, the price of pressing and the sleeves. The record was unusual in that it featured the same tracks on both sides and was a mono recording. The song "Handlebars" ends with the Desperate Bicycles' strident DIY rallying cry "it was easy, it was cheap - go and do it!". Roger Stephens and Danny Wrigley hawked the “Smokescreen” single around the small independent record shops, and distributors such as Virgin and Rough Trade. The first pressing sold out within four months resulting in a profit to the band of £210. Using this money a second pressing of 1,000 was made, which sold out in a fortnight.

Small Brown Bike (The Band)

Artist: Small Brown Bike

Small Brown Bike was a band from Marshall, Michigan that existed between 1996 and 2004. The band was sparked from an earlier band Help! The Lookout started by former front man Mike Reed, and his brother, Bass player Ben Reed the band consisted of 80's guitar like riffs and melodic style vocals. The trademark of Small Brown Bike this four-piece is "double vocals" backed by melodies. Their sound is often identified as being similar to other post-hardcore bands--often Small Brown Bike's close contemporaries--such as Avail, Hot Water Music and Dillinger Four. Their last show was in 2004 at The Fireside Bowl in Chicago, after already agreeing to split up. Former members Mike Reed and Dan Jaquint later created the band La Salle, with Reed's wife playing bass guitar. Ben Reed is now the singer in the Great Sea Serpents based out of Chicago, IL.

The band name is derived from their working experience as bike mechanics.

The band announced a return to songwriting on October 6, 2009.

Splodgenessabounds- Bicycle Seat

Artist: Splodgenessabounds
Song: Bicycle Seat
Album: Splodgenessabounds (1981)

Formed in 1977 in South East London, signed to Decca Records in 1980 and released first single 2 ints of Lager. After various deaths and jail sentences, settled with current line up in 1992.

Max Splodge Vox & Trombone
Johnny Chunders Guitar
Harry Monk Drums
Mat Sergent Bass

This is a straightforward reissue of the mighty Splodge's debut album, bolstered by sufficient bonus tracks (14) to transform it into a virtual anthology of the band's entire early-'80s catalog, from the U.K. hits "Two Pints of Lager," "Two Little Boys," and "Cowpunk Medlum," through to their contributions to the legendary Strength Thru Oi! compilation album. It's a wild and riotous ride, utterly absurd but absolutely captivating -- "Michael Booth's Talking Bum" remains one of the most memorable farting songs ever unveiled, rivaled only by the wiffy-ridden sentiments of "Blown Away Like a Fart in a Thunderstorm," while such slabs of whimsy as "I Fell in Love With a Female Plumber From Harlesden NW10" and "I've Got Lots of Famous People Living Under the Floor Boards of Humble Abode" are as intriguing as their ridiculously overlong titles. "Anarchy Chaos Stanley Ogden" immortalizes one of British television's best-loved soap operatics; "Rolf" pays tribute to the Australian wobble-board virtuoso who wrote the preceding "Two Little Boys"...the madness truly does go on forever. Collectors will thrill to discover not only the B-sides to the band's first four singles, but also such treasures as the "Yarmouth 5-0" flexi-disc, and the hitherto 12"-only "Sox" and "The Butterfly Song," while music historians find their attention drawn to "We're Pathetique," Splodge's rallying call for a musical genre which precious few people even remember today. But the Punk Pathetique movement spawned not only Splodge, but also such joys as the Toy Dolls and Peter & the Test Tube Babies, and is still has an impact today. Cockney Rejects - Where The Hell Is Babylon

Artist: Cockney Rejects

Song: Where The Hell Is Babylon

Album: Greatest Hits vol.4 (1997) or Back On The Street (2000)

Inspired by the critically reviled working-class punk of Sham 69, the Cockney Rejects helped give voice to the punk subgenre tagged Oi!, partly thanks to the group's 1980 song "Oi! Oi! Oi!" The Rejects' sound was loud, brash, and crudely performed, with an irreverent sense of humor and an inclination towards mindless anarchy that made them appealing to frustrated lower-class youth and,… more

WELL IT'S BEEN ALMOST 20 YEARS AND NOW THEIR BACK. THE COCKNEY REJECTS ARE ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL OI BANDS EVER. HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO GET A PIECE OF THAT HISTORY. 16 NEWELY RECORDED CLASSICS THAT ARE SURE TO MAKE YOU WANT TO SHAVE YOUR HEAD AND POLISH UP YOUR BOOTS. IF YOU MISSED IT THE FIRST TIME, THIS IS YOUR REDEMPTION...

I like to think of this as the Rejects' mocking answer to the Ruts' "Babylon's Burning". No time for poetic gibberish, we got a life to live, kind of.

music

Where the Hell is Babylon? I wanna go today
But before I leave the house, I've gotta know the way
Where the Hell is Babylon? I've heard it's lots of fun
Can I get there on me bike, or straight up the M1?

Defiance Ohio - To Lanterns, Denver, And One Last Lament

Artist: Defiance Ohio

Song: To Lanterns, Denver, And One Last Lament

Album: Defiance Ohio - Ghost Mice (split ep 2004)

Defiance, Ohio is an acoustic punk (typically referred to as folk-punk) band from Columbus, Ohio. They are known for their extensive touring and intense, enthusiastic live shows.

this song is about friends going their seperate ways. it's about missing the friends that I left behind in columbus. sometimes I have drifted away from people and now want nothing to do with them, but they still possess all the amazing traits that made me want to spend all the time I did with them. I want to remember this, and I want them to know this as we move on.

music

download

saying "i hate" and "i didn't think the time was right," are sometimes the same or at least alike in action. i think you should say "this is what i want." maybe columbus went to far and bloomington, well that's where we are, but i'd like to think we would be relevent to each other again one of these days. (i want) you to be what all the printed cloth and papers proclaim! what all your favorite bands seem to explain.

who would have thought that i'd end up here, that you'd end up here, but that this is where you and i should end? though i think it should and know it's for the best, i want you to know that you're still just as beautiful as the day we met.

and when we speak again, i can tell you how i still can't roll cigarettes, or how i showed up in denver, once almost by accident, or how i learned of diogynes' haunts of rome in search of honest men. and you'd tell me things i could never predict, of bikes or of the baltic sear or the woes of your last laments. things i'd never expect ...

we write the songs of revolution, and we write the songs of the love. it's not always easy to sing along, and it's near impossible to sing twice as loud, when your best friend quits singing along!!!

Defiance Ohio - Bikes and Bridges

Artist: Defiance Ohio

Song: Bikes and Bridges

Album: Share What Ya' Got (2003)

Defiance, Ohio is an acoustic punk (typically referred to as folk-punk) band from Columbus, Ohio. They are known for their extensive touring and intense, enthusiastic live shows.

music

download

Even columbus looks better on the back seat of a bike and all my fears get washed away in a stream of blinking lights and the concrete strip below seems less like a noose and more like a tie that binds or at least a tourniquet. it's been such a hard season and the bridges we burned might be all we had to keep us from drowning. but at least we had this time; and i'd like to think we're better off for it. i'll remember this. sometimes broken things make the best building supplies. and we'll keep on building. hearts aren't made of glass, they're made of muscle and blood and something else. and they don't so much as break as bend and tear. we have what it takes to keep it together; and move on.

Any relationship that matters - a friendship, a family, a romance, a band - anything - is a perilous and fragile thing because along with all the amazing experiences and creations that can come from something so intimate and exhausting comes the possibility for things to crumble and shatter or whither and die. when that happens, it's easy to forget what was precious amidst all the disaster. we should always carry our history with us but never let it bury us.

The Faction - Skate and Destroy

Artist: The Faction

Song: Skate and Destroy

The Faction was a punk rock band from San Jose, California who were closely linked to the underground skateboarding culture. The band played primarily during the years 1982 to 1985 (…)

Though the lyrics of only two songs in their entire discography dealt explicitly with skating, the Faction was still the pioneering force in this punk rock offshoot. After all, they composed the quintessential skate-rock song, "Skate and Destroy."

Forget the light, skate and destroy
Pass the jogger, skate and destroy
Snap it back, skate and destroy
Kick that bike, skate and destroy
It's not a cause or political belief, it's something in my thinking
If you agree it's cool by me, at least I'm not a robot
I'm not afraid of things I read, I won't divide my friends up
Dictatorship of people's minds is not what I will strive for
The cops are coming after me, their sons are BMXers
They always try to stop me but urethane is faster than boots
You may be in a parking lot throwing up your contents
So what who cares I know I don't
Be a hood, don't be good.

Poly Styrene - Bicycle Song

Artist: Poly Styrene

Songs: Bicycle Song

Album: Translucence (1981)

Marian Joan Elliott Said, better known by the stage name Poly Styrene, is an English musician, best known as the singer of the punk rock band X-Ray Spex.

Poly Styrene in 1980 used her musical and poetic talents to create something different than X-Ray Spex' Germ Free Adolescents. This is acoustic, quiet, tranquil, tinkling, and bubbling. And Poly's delivery is not a "wail" as some had described her voice on the X-Ray Spex' album. Here she delivers her lyrics softly, at times almost in a whisper. The music is soothing, and the mood is peaceful. But don't get too comfortable.

For those who like to rock, avoid this album. For those whose tastes are a little more eclectic and aren't afraid of sampling new delicacies, than this will definitely be a tasty little morsel. The most striking element of the record is Poly's gorgeous singing, supported by the supple, jazzy arrangements. Clearly, not as aggressive or confrontational as her work with X-Ray Spex, but equally as rewarding. (Allmusic)

The Jam - Wasteland

Artist: The Jam

Song: Wasteland

Album: Setting Sons (1979)

The Jam was an English rock band active during the late 1970s and early 1980s. While they shared the "angry young men" outlook and fast tempos of their punkrock contemporaries, The Jam wore neatly tailored suits rather than ripped clothes and incorporated a number of mainstream 1960s rock influences rather than rejecting them, placing them at the forefront of the mod revival movement.

Setting Sons was originally planned as a concept album about three childhood friends who, upon meeting after some time apart, discover the different directions in which they've grown apart.

(…) It had been reported prior to release that the album would deal with the concept of how 3 childhood friends had changed as they became adults after a modern-day English civil war (described in the song "Wasteland"). In essence, it was to be a Weller-generation version of The Kinks album Arthur,or: The Decline and Fall of the British Empire. (The two albums do make very good companion pieces.)

review

Meet me on the wastelands - later this day,
We'll sit and talk and hold hands maybe,
For there's not much else to do in this drab and colourless
place.
We'll sit amongst the rubber tyres,
Amongst the discarded bric-a-brac,
People have no use for - amongst the smouldering embers of
yesterday.

And when or if the sun shines,
Lighting our once beautiful features,
We'll smile but only for seconds,
For to be caught smiling is to acknowledge life,
A brave but useless show of compassion,
And that is forbidden in this drab and colourless world.

Meet me on the wastelands - the ones behind,
The old houses - the ones - left standing pre-war -
The ones overshadowed by the monolith monstrosities -
councils call homes.

And there amongst the shit - the dirty linen,
The holy Coca-Cola tins - the punctured footballs,
The ragged dolls - the rusting bicycles,
We'll sit and probably hold hands.

And watch the rain fall - watch it - watch it -
Tumble and fall - tumble and falling -
Like our lives - like our lives -
Just like our lives.

We'll talk about the old days,
When the wasteland was release when we could play,
And think - without feeling guilty -
Meet me later but we'll have to hold hands.
Tumble and fall - tumble and falling -
Like our lives - like our lives -
Exactly like our lives.

Primer 55 - Tricycle

Artist: Primer 55

Song: Tricycle

Album: The New Release (2001)

Primer 55  is an American rock band from Louisville, Kentucky.

music

review

There's very little on the second album from Primer 55 to suggest they've learned anything since their derivative debut. It's standard issue nu metal -- soft verses complemented (if that's what it can be called) by aggressive choruses, self-serving hard rock therapy, etc. Plenty of other bands do this stuff a whole lot better and with much more conviction.

I wake up late for school and i run like hell to try and catch the bus
never thought about it but those days ment more than i thought they would.
hanging out late with my friends, having fun like punks will do.
i never thought those days would ever end so soon.
but t ime goes by and all your views on life, they start to change.
when you see the world for what it is, it never looks the same.
you walk around with a chip on your shoulder.
cause everyday you know you're just getting older.

[pre-chorus]
i never thought it would be
it's just a way of life
i never though it would be
such a petty life

i wake up late for work and i drive like hell
trying to make ends meat.
gotta borrow money cause my baby don't have shit to eat.
staying up late, got two jobs, work my fingers to the bone.
spending more time at those jobs than i ever spend at home.
and i can't help but feel the stress, all my bills keep adding up.
it's days like this, wish i was a kid, because i've had enough.
look in the mirror, see my face getting older
cause everyday i see feel the world getting colder.

[chorus]
i never thought it would be
it's just a way of life
i never thought it would be
such a petty life
all of my memories keep coming back again
all mysecurities i'll never have again
wanting so much to be, to be myself again
give it all back to me
i want it back

[bridge]
bring it back
bring it back to me
the innocence i felt
the happiness i felt
no matter what the cost
and everything i've lost

[repeat chorus]

it's how i live my life, so fuck you,
get the fuck off my back.

The Buzzcocks - Peking Hooligan

Artist: The Buzzcocks

Song: Peking Hooligan

Album: Screen On The Green (bootleg, 1976)

Buzzcocks are an English punk rock band formed in Manchester in 1975. They have been led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Pete Shelley for nearly their entire existence.

Whilst many archive recordings are best left in the can, the Buzzcocks' first demos--previously widely available as a bootleg--are an exception to that rule. TIME'S UP marks the brief moment that Howard Devoto fronted Buzzcocks, before forming Magazine and passing the reins to Pete Shelley. The group's subsequent flurry of perfect, lovelorn punk-pop singlesis well known, but their early abrasive edge was only captured on one classic EP, "Spiral Scratch". Early versions of "Boredom" and "Breakdown" included on TIME'S UP pound along seemingly on pure adrenaline, with Devoto drinking from a well of frustration and sarcasm, whilst articulating himself ina most non-punk fashion.
Ragged, impatient, exciting versions of songs Shelley would later make his own, like "Orgasm Addict" and "Love Battery", are heard in all their raw, bloodied glory. Covers of Captain Beefheart and the Troggs aredeftly dismantled with a mix of reverence and contempt. TheBuzzcocks were arguably the first band to catch on to punk after hearing the Sex Pistols--these recordings are so early, they aren't even out of bed yet. And as for Devoto, he wasn't long for punk, but he lent it more in an instant than countless pretenders ever did.

Screen On The Green [BOOTLEG]

Red Vinyl 7 inch (Apr 1995 UK) Time's Up Records SHELL1 (33 1/3 RPM)

NOTES:

Their London debut gig.

Gez notes: 'This very day [Apr 25, 1995], i've received a red vinyl 7" bootleg entitled "Screen on the Green". Photo on the front is of a very young looking Buzzcocks wearing the same clothes as used on the Time's Up Document LP/CD (but not the same photo). On the back is written in red `Live at the Screen on the Green 29th August 1976' and

`Limited edition of 500 copies'. Interestingly enough it features, to my knowledge the first appearance of any kind for Peking Hooligan apart from home made bootleg tapes. It's the same track from the bootleg '76 tape I've got where the lyrics don't seem to square at

all with those given for Peking Hooligan in the Devoto book, so i'm still a bit perplexed on that one.'

Andrew Brown report the full set list: Breakdown, Friends Of Mine, Times Up, Orgasm Addict, Peking Hooligan, Lester Sands, Oh Shit!, You Tear Me Up, Love Battery, I Can't Control Myself.

Recorded live at the Screen On The Green, Aug 29, 1976 in Islington, north London
