MC Chris - Kill It

Artist: McChris

Song: Kill It

Album: MCChriss Is Dead (2008)

Mc chris (born Christopher Brendan Ward IV on September 2, 1975, Libertyville, Illinois) is an American rapper, voice actor, writer and improvisational comedian.

mc chris is dead is the fifth album by hip-hop artist mc chris and was released May 27, 2008 for digital download from Amazon.com, iTunes, and Zune Marketplace while the hard copy became available for preorder at indiemerchstore.com on April 28, 2008 which had six more tracks than the digital download copies. A vinyl edition and special "Black" edition were released on December 1st, including a bonus track, "My Rhymes."

The album is dedicated to Murray Walter Goff, mc chris' newborn nephew who was diagnosed at birth with Cystic fibrosis.

Believe it or not I am rocking the mic
An easy combo to remember like the lock on your bike
My name is mc chris havin' the time of my life
Turn the mic into dynamite, like Yosemite might, right?
Cause I got the beats and I got the flavor
The narcs on my fart like the ark's got raiders
I'm makin' paper you're makin' excuses
You're abusing glue sticks
Sorry but the shoe fits
You're what's called a nuisance, I'm a new artist
Only got the farthest cause I'm workin' the hardest
So F you hated B's need to chill real soon
Take a hammer to your grill, like I'm Oh Dae Su
Lego head girl girls that smoke too much doob
kicking ass with the 'stache of a Fu Manchu.
Two blue tattoos, that used to be black
you a bad enough dude to stay off of my back?

chorus

Believe it or not I can out-style all these know-it-alls
Getting greedy 'cause I made a CD at the local mall
Maybe these preemies need their Wheaties, perpetrating in a Powerglove
(??The Rock swiggin' at like a plastic bag of sour nug)
Gotta gargle lava if you wanna spit fire
Save the drama for your mama, we all know that shit's tired.
Just 'cause you're hoping to flow don't mean you can open the show.
You gotta girl and she at home with a head full of holes
I'm like baseball cards, but with mp3s.
I rock bicycle spokes- just a joke MC.
See, you ride up on my grip like I got the gan-yo.
Let me hit the bong slow while I say “RAW Bro!”
This is for the haters. They got something to prove.
If they didn't hate on me then they'd have nothing to do.
Watch me body slam a n00b on the hard concrete.
I make a living musing over hardcore beats.

Artist: Hawksley Workman

Song: (The Happiest Day I Know Is A) Tokyo Bicycle

Album: Meat (2010)

Ryan Corrigan (born March 4, 1975), better known by the stage name Hawksley Workman, is a Canadian rock singer-songwriter who has garnered critical acclaim for his blend of cabaret pop and glam rock. Workman has released eleven full length albums throughout his career. He is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, drums, bass, keyboards and singing on his records and often switching between those instruments when playing live.

The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle
The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle

And it was in Paris
Just past the Place des Vosges
I went into Muji
Prenez deux noir stylos
I was tipped off to the place
By a friend from London town
She says it's got the nicest stuff to find that was there to be found

The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle
The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle

And Mister Shibuya
He owns this subway car
You don't fuck with him any day
No matter who you are
You may have friends in the embassy
But they won't come when you call
You better ride your bike outta here
Before I'm forced to watch you fall

The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle
The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle
The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle
The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle

The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle
The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle
The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle
The happiest day I know is a Tokyo bicycle

Goes to Hell

Spare the rod, spoil the child
Fuck that shit I'm about to go wild
Went to the backyard found myself a switch
Wimpy little shit is about to get hit
Upside the head with a bucket of sand
Fucking shit up cause I'm fuckin intense
I'm tenser than fuck I'm denser than shrubs
I'm straight out the pub with a fistful of fuck you

Whatcha gonna do, where you gonna sit
Beat that bad butt with a hickory stick
Lickity split, sick of these kids
Want my side of corn and a bucket of ribs
Fuck em up quick
Don't miss my game
Every little sound a little light in my brain
So don't complain, like I'm always saying
Might get the belt or the bicycle chain

Smackababy in the morning, smackababy in the light
Smackababy in the evening if you're feelin like a fight
Smackababy in your home, smackababy on a train
Smackababy anywhere you like just please do not refrain
Smackababy, smackababy, smackababy, c'mon
Smackababy make me go crazy
Smackababy, smackababy, smackababy, c'mon
Smackababy make me go crazy

Beat that boy, hurl that girl
Heres two tickets to a tilt-a-whirl
Pump that pup, choke that chap
Show em who's boss, ain't takin' no crap
Ain't takin' no mess, ain't takin no guff
Ain't takin' no less so you better bite your tongue
Better watch your mouth, better stay in line
Gonna get gone or I'm gonna get mine
So shut the fuck up and let me chill
Bring me a beer and a bottle of pills
Sit real still don't make a peep
Or I'll get my sickle and reap my seed
I love you kid cause you're my kin
TV's on and you don't say shit
Take off your shoes and stay off the couch
And just get lost, shut your motherfuckin mouth

Smackababy in the morning, smackababy in the light
Smackababy in the evening if you're feelin like a fight
Smackababy in your home, smackababy on a train
Smackababy anywhere you like just please do not refrain

N.E.R.D. - Provider

Artist: N.E.R.D.

Song: Provider

Album: In Search Of… (2001)

The acronym N.E.R.D. stands for "No One Ever Really Dies," but childhood friends Chad Hugo, Pharrell Williams, and Shay most certainly used the group to proudly emphasize the nerdier aspects of their musical personalities. Before this side project took shape, Hugo and Williams -- as the Neptunes -- had established themselves as giants in the field of pop production, whether they were working with hardcore rappers, smooth crooners, or teen pop groups. Although their faces were known to many due to this prominence, N.E.R.D. allowed the duo to take center stage, as rock stars, even if a new alias was being used.

The trio recorded its first album, In Search Of..., and released it in Europe in late 2001.

“Provider” was the third and final single from the album. It managed to gain minor popularity in Europe, making the charts in the Netherlands and Sweden. In the UK, it was released as a double a-side with a re-release of "Lapdance," peaking at #20.

The video opens with two girls and a guy in a truck, the guy asking the two if they remember a guy named Shagg. Pharrell and Chad ride around with a bike gang interspersed with scenes of a young man (Brad Renfro) struggling to make ends meet and his pregnant girlfriend (Kelli Garner). She suggests he apply to the military, which he angrily rejects but reluctantly does. The video ends with Pharrell wearing cammo and holding a little girl displaying the peace sign with other children around him doing the same. Tony Hawk and Travis Barker make a cameo in a convenience store scene, while Pusha T of the Clipse appears as a drug dealer.

Woke up I had the same clothes on I had on last night
Damn
I must have passed out
And cash is just like the clothes I worn yesterday
We are broke
Damn
I gotta get my ass out
I went to see what my friend was talking about
Drugs
He told me cocaine would get you clout
My momma said he's trouble and schools my route
But I went to high school and got kicked out
So I'm driving this truck down the 95
I pray to God I make it home alive
I don't get pulled over by the man
I just want to make it home to hold your hand

Chorus

Goodbye beloved one
Do you know what I am
If you don't see my face no more
I'm a provider girl, gotta face the streets tonight
Goodbye beloved one
Do you know what I am
You don't see my face no more
I'm a rider, girl gotta face the streets tonight
You say you don't want me to go but I have to
Please don't weep
I love you

I refuse to be a bum
Especially coming where I'm from
I'm a provider girl
And I love you
So it's just like I said before
Heading down 95
Dodging Johnny law
I don't need a ticket though I never got one
If he pulls me over
He can feel my shotgun
I think about life pull down my hat
It's just like this road I don't know where I'm at
I don't want to be another cocaine story
Will I find my sanity
Where I find my glory

Come on
Repeat Chorus
Someday, Someday, this will be over
We'll raise a family
I'll get a job and I'll be a voter
And if I die
It will change you
Change you
I watch over a family
But only as an angel
So don't tell me you don't know what you see
When you're looking at a motherfucker just like me
I'm a provider girl
I said don't tell me you don't know what you see
When you're looking at a motherfucker just like me
I'm a rider girl

Repeat Chorus

I love you girl
I'm doing this for us
I don't know any better
What am I supposed to do
Nothing I love you

cLOUDDEAD - Bike

Artist: cLOUDDEAD

Song: Bike (part 1, part 2)

Album: cLOUDDEAD (2001)

Also on single Bike (2001)

Dose One, Sole (Anticon), DJ Signify, Illogic and Mr. Dibbs on this release. the whole cloudhead series (#1- #5) kick. Great underground Hip Hop

Really trying to pinpoint this albums genre and influences will drive you crazy. they sound like no one and for me, thats the kick. as any one who has done any reading on clouddead knows, this cd is comprised of 6 10" records for a total of 12 songs. each suite features a guest. illogic is on 'apt. a', 'and all you can do is laugh' has dj signify scratching and cutting up vocal samples, 'i promise to never get paint on my glasses' has sole, the wolf brothers add live drums, guitar and organ to 'jimmybreeze', 'cloud dead #5' features cuts from mr. dibbs, and finally, 'bike' features all sorts of weirdness from the bay area animals. the entire record was made with a dr. sample, a radioshack mic, an eight track, and various instruments, etc. this record is one of the best arguments i've heard for the term "less is more". the magazine and website Lifesucksdie has stated that cLOUDDEAD "as close as you can get to a description of what doing whippets sounds like", and thats not a false statement by a long shot. i'd classify this album as hip hop but you're just as likely to find it in the 'indie rock' or 'electronica' bins at the record store. i cant totally recomend this to everyone but I can guarentee that any anticon followers or brave hip hop listeners will get something out of this.

music

why?:
edison, i've fixed my glasses like new!

dose one:
wishing coins well, off into the bad sleep well.

why?:
reaching to quiet the man made of metal and brick.

dose one:
sleeping in woman's clothes, naked walls filling my eyes.

why?:
kneading the knotted, cramped muscles; the head of a nut.

dose one:
holding my place in a necklace collection, whala!

why?:
scraping the hardened, dead mortar from under my nails.

dose one:
weeding out sounding like movies, why i'd rather read.

why?:
sparring the volunteer flower, the beautiful guest.

dose one:
greetings, my god given name is adam in love.

why?:
edison, i've fixed my glasses like new!

dose one:
wishing coins well, off into the bad sleep well.

dose one, why?:
de, sha, vu. cats, clipped, whiskers, x.

dose one:
dear jon,
she's no longer calling, and the sun just keeps coming up.

why?:
dear adam,
i'm dropping out of art school.
i'm thinking of becoming a machete man in the rainforest.

dose one:
my box is made, the pills erect, it's one cut cookie syndrome.
the pill that's huge and swallows other pills.
it's jar bottom right below me, and not a spot of cork above,
why can i barely see exactly where the loop is marked?
it cuts in, i cut out, pidagurpidagle says hello,
and hunts the pilot light within the heater monolith she prays to.

why?:
art museums make me want to kill myself,
i understand now why pidagurpidagle pulls on the door
even when she knows it's locked shut.
people surround themselves with pets
to deny the fact that they're alone, most of the time.
"stop the world, i want off."
-easy axess.

chorus:
are you scared the album will end before the doorbell rings,
and you'll be left to greet your guests
with a tied tongue, cold lunch, and spent wick candle?

dose one:
looking for an explanation everywhere except in.
as i stuff my face from dirty pot,
and greasy spoon, and sweaty peas, and buttered rice,
and the water's running. i think ribs like rosebush branches.
flies in eyes, the corners of, and sally struthers don't be depressed.
i've made it to the mystery of mona lisa's mouth.

why?:
the streets smell like beer and exhaust this christmas.
don't be depressed, but no one wants to rent movies
to an out-of-towner without a credit card.
i did nothing today, but walk a blind man to his bus stop.

chorus

dose one, why?:
as the floor boards creek and the pipes ping and pong beneath you...

dose one, why?:
mother nature made the aeroplane, and the submarine sandwich,
with the steady hands and dead eye of a remarkable sculptor.
she shed her mountain turning training wheels
for the convenience of the moving sidewalk,
that delivers the magnetic monkey children
through the mouth of impossible calendar clock,
into the devil's manhole cauldron.
physics of a bicycle, isn't it remarkable?

(backwards):
physics of a bicycle, isn't it remarkable?
and turns our friends and family into cold hard cash.
it was our idea first to put dead whales on the roadside,
i am fresh dirt, grab your hoe and rake and shake the earth.
i caught you looking like a barbed-wire fire escape.
i've been an ex-president since the day i was born.
what do you call a three-legged dog? lucky.
doesn't mean it's all valour and vagina.
just because i've got poet head and write all the time,
you bring tears to my ever-dry eyes.

chorus:
the dead dog, on the shoulder of 71,
here's where the flies come in.
this is where the flies come in.

why?:
the fat man's drenched hat crumpled in a shivering fist,
he's lost the whole house from around him.
every single shingle shattered into atoms.
only he remains, standing circumcised on torn earth,
where his living room once was stripped to his skin
with a wet hate in his right hand.

dose one:
umbrella inverted and undressed,
stuffed in the top of a trash can.
'right as rain' spokes reach,
grabbing coats and poking pocket books.
its dress is torn to one last spoke.
it pours a sliding sheet of rain over the side, over the side.

why?:
the cracked earth cow-skull dirt in a no-cloud blue sky capsule,
leaks out the ozone's bald spot along with your brand new closed curtains,
a dozen frozen roses and cozmo, the thumbed cat.

dose one, why?:
2 women walk up to a penny.
one says, 'oh look a penny.'
then the other one says, 'oh, it's a lucky one.'
then the one goes, 'no it isn't.'
and they both walk off.

cLOUDDED - Ten

Artist: cLOUDDEAD

Song: Physiscs of a Unicycle

Album: Ten (2004)

Clouddead (styled as cLOUDDEAD) was a musical group consisting of the experimental hip hop musicians Doseone (Adam Drucker), Why? (Yoni Wolf), and Odd Nosdam (David Madson). Generally Drucker and Wolf provide the group's vocals while Madson produces the music. ignoring Doseone's request to "just call it hip hop".

Clouddead's first six 10″ singles were compiled in 2001 as a self-titled compilation album. Printed on the sleeve of "Dead Dogs Two" is "this is cLOUDDEAD number 9 of ten", indicating that as of Ten, Clouddead, as a group, have finished making music. In an interview around Ten's release, Drucker hinted that tensions between Madson and Wolf, as well as each member's heavy workload, had hastened the group's demise.

The group's name came from a nonsensical knock-knock joke Drucker's sister told him when she was five years old.

review

Orville and Wilbur
cold cut the anchor's from their ankle,
carving propellers from whale fins
in the back of a bicycle shop...
and thus begins the tale
of the thumb trigger cloud kill.

At last the Wright's reinvented the horse with wings,
another invention only fit for a mannequin.

Early time machine's
will have tended to leave you
left screaming
on a dinosaur's dish.

In da Vinci's "Bike Accident',
an outerspace whodunit?
monkeys play Magellan
as the next ex-Edison,
standing out in the crowd with a unicycle.

Physics of a unicycle...
twice the remarkable.

cLOUDDEAD - Physics of a Bicycle

Artist: cLOUDDEAD

Song: Physics of a Bicycle

Album: Well Deep: Ten Years Of Big Dada (2007) - VVAA

Physics of a Bicycle was published on Peel session (2001)

Clouddead (styled as cLOUDDEAD) was a musical group consisting of the experimental hip hop musicians Doseone (Adam Drucker), Why? (Yoni Wolf), and Odd Nosdam (David Madson). Generally Drucker and Wolf provide the group's vocals while Madson produces the music.Occasionally Madson's vocals can be heard, while Drucker and Wolf provide music, especially for the group's only album.

Clouddead's sound is notoriously hard to define, and although it is undoubtedly grounded in "traditional" hip-hop, influences as varied aselectronica, psychedelic music and indie rock can be heard. Because of this non-traditional take on hip-hop, Clouddead have been characterized as "smartarse surrealism", with some elements of the rap community rejecting the notion that the group can be classed as hip hop at all, ignoring Doseone's request to "just call it hip hop".

Clouddead's first six 10″ singles were compiled in 2001 as a self-titled compilation album. review

We work the mics and rehearse the lines that life furthers
And curse the vines that you might have heard your rumors from
Like it's me verse a vice or vice versa
Then I returned to the life that Christ nurtured
Come come now
You're feet first in ice water
We're feet first in fire
We reversed the modern and earned the checks
From the check one-two's
The three-four-fives
And the right to watch the sun on the eastern seaboard rise
[Mictlan]
Pack up the bags, eat
Sleep for a second
Then it's back in the van
Listen to beats for the record
Feel like it's all that I ever knew
Convenient procedure
All for the revenue
Leave at my leisure
So coming soon to a college town near you
DTR here we are
Holla atcha rap group
Incorporated so of course it's hated
Write, record, order it, re-order it the more we make it
[Dessa]
This is not a promise it's a threat
The cigarette to your balloon
Cue the gossip roll the tape I rock the room
Say it's a nose job
As in she got it cause she knows somebody
I'm paying dues in red blood and borrowed money
Son me if you can
Lemme see your grand plan
A low-budget production bandana glamour on a handcam
Here let me sign your poster strike a poser
Sleeping in my armor while you're sleeping on your holster
[P.O.S.]
It goes get money waste
Rather take money from a thing we need to a thing we see
Jake honey nothing's free
True indeed
Open the seam
Scribble the bleed
Agitate seed to leaves
Conceive Doomtree
Blood brothers
Close shutters
They don't need to see this beast
Prose sputters free
Those other Joes peddle cheap
And shody work'll bruise your body purple
Some folk'll never lose a toe, but then again some folk'll
[Sims]
You say that hell is human
I say you break it you buy it and make the shell-toes move in on self-improvement quicker that you could sell the movement
Make the circuits mash across the circus act
Two-thousand-something moving circa that
Turn off the screwdriver
Ghostwriter for hire
Tie up the wires
I am the fire supplier of inspired rap
Burn the empire back
It's Doomtree live through the wiretapa

Trunk Boiz - Scraper Bike

Artist: Trunk Boiz

Song: Scraper Bike

The Trunk Boiz are one of the first rap groups to attain commercial success from the burgeoning scraper bike scene of the Bay Area of California. Their first hit, Scraper Bike, introduced mainstream America to scraper bikes, a distinct type of bicycle (inspired by the scraper car style) ridden in predominantly African American communities near or within Oakland, California. Many of their rhyming schemes are quite unconventional and some might even say groundbreaking. For instance, in the hit song Scraper Bike, they rhyme words with themselves, such as "retarded" with "retarded". They also rhyme the plural version of a word with the singular version of that same word such as with "bikes" and "bike".

Young Champ, J Dub, and B-Janky rap in the song. Beat produced by NB.

About Scraper Bike

Bikes that are nicely spray painted, and feature aluminum foil wrapped around sets of spokes…

I'm movin' on my scraper bike
I'm cruisin' on my scraper bike
My scraper bike go hard
I don't need no car
Smashin' on my scraper bike
Scraping on my scraper bike
Scraping on my scraper bike

On my scraper bike [x4]

I like Huskies, Mountains, Pacifics and
Schwinns
Ghost ride my bike is here to win
I go stupid, dumb, AT retarded
Scraping my bikes looking hella retarded
But it's good, cause I'm ridin' on 4's on my scraper bike
Like I'm in the pros
And you know, I go on the hater of the scraper bikes, girl you know
I'm the king of the scraper bikes
I'm not just nice
I got 24 inches on my scraper bike
They go hard, hard to the fools in every
part[?] and if you get out of line, you might just fall
Or I might just push ya
Go AT Dummy yeah they call me The Pusha
Only if you knew just how I do
I ride the scraper bikes with me and my crew

I'm movin' on my scraper bike
I'm cruisin' on my scraper bike
My scraper bike go hard
I don't need no car
Smashin' on my scraper bike
Scraping on my scraper bike
Scraping on my scraper bike

On my scraper bike [x4]

You might see me ridin' two wheels scraper bikin'
Smashin' downhill, like I came from hiking
Pull a lesbo, get away from dykin'
From the block to the booth, yeah I'm always ridin'
Two toned D-BO's red and black
You might see me with champ ridin back to back
Yellow, green, orange with bling, scraper bikes is on the scene
Trunk Boiz drill, that's my team, got a fire red bike just like the bean
Pull that blue thing out and you know it's through
Pro pallin in the street, bro, what that do
Got rims on candies, slappin' too
Don't think I'm finished, I'm only halfway through
Might spin another rack, or maybe two
Don't hate I got a bike that make your mama choose

I'm movin' on my scraper bike
I'm cruisin' on my scraper bike
My scraper bike go hard
I don't need no car
Smashin' on my scraper bike
Scraping on my scraper bike
Scraping on my scraper bike

On my scraper bike [x4]

What is this?
What do we have here?
Handlebars? I don't even have to steer
Scraper bike, oh so hype
15 deep, man I wish you (I won't!)
Movin' fast, real swiftly
With something you've never seen
Oh so spiffy
Scraper bikes was invented in the towns
By a champ who loves to get around
When we come around, they know who we be
Touch slappin' the 15, promoting our CDs
On the bike, and even in the car
Still pullin' bras, lookin' like a star
It got TV's on it and he got slapped
"Wait a minute guy are there spinners on that?"
We always comin' out with something new in the O
Contagious trends and ideas that go

I'm movin' on my scraper bike
I'm cruisin' on my scraper bike
My scraper bike go hard
I don't need no car
Smashin' on my scraper bike
Scraping on my scraper bike
Scraping on my scraper bike

On my scraper bike [x3]
On my scraper bike [x4]

Cool Kids - Black Mags

Artist: Cool Kids

Song: Black Mags

Album: The Bake Sale (2008)

Part of the mid-2000s hip-hop movement that found kids in all-over prints rapping about their shoes and their favorite forms of transportation (which often weren't cars), the Cool Kids proved to be both an Internet and live show phenomenon. The duo of Mikey Rocks(born Antoine Reed) and Chuck Inglish (or Evan Ingersoll) met in mid-2005 after Mickey came across some of Chuck's beats online and liked what he heard. They met up in their Chicago-area homes (whereMikey was born and raised; Chuck lived in Mount Clemens, MI, about 30 miles north of Detroit, until he was 11) with the intention of making beats to sell to other artists, but soon realized their own measured, ... review

Verse (Chuck):

I got this 89-90, Pistons champ flat/ bill black starter cap with the hologram tags/
White Mag rims, red rubber tires/
Chain, frame, pegs, grips, shift to my supplier/
Dope man attire, gimme bout an hour/
And I'll have it clicking, ticking, gliding, flying like McGuyver/
I'm a Murder Club, dope pedal rider/
Nigel said I'm good to get that ink on my bicep/
I gets, busy as a bee on my bike grips/
If I catwalk this, I walk, I can fly this/
Bitch and I'm fly, and it's tied to the side/
that's the flag that I'm flying/
Add to the fact that it all coincides with these wheels that I'm riding/
3pt Mags make you think that I'm gliding/
... Shiiiit nigga I aint lying/
I got a long rap sheet that'll say that I'm tied in/

Chorus

Verse (Mikey):

I hit chuck on the pager yo, I'm kinda bored/
And got class til later so, open garage/
And I don't really know which way to go, I aint tryna skate it though/
And my bikes illegal, so they send for the law/
But I don't care joe, I just keep on pedalin/
Ride past shorty light skinned with no melanin/
Shirt look like somebody stuffed two melons in/
Had to stop, so I could preach like revered/
I grip on the handbrake and say "Whatup?"/
I skip on the handshakes, I'm straight. What else? /
I got two pegs on the back, and you got two legs under your skirt/
So ho, we head/
To the Dope Pedal Headquarters/
You would be there if you could/
Chuck got the red wheels and the white mags, but it's all good/
Got the gold hundred spokes like Boys in the Hood/
With the lime green frame, dollars on the bike/
Seat, handlebar grips, is the same as my Nikes/
In the mold, the gold I use for my spokes/
And the frame, the same as I use for my chain/ Out!

Chorus

The Flobots - Hanlebars

Artist: The Flobots

Song: Handlebars

Album: Fight With Tools (2008)

Featuring dual MCs as well as a full band, the Flobots are a progressive rap group from Denver, CO, with a political conscious, musical chops, and a powerful live show.

more

Formed as a cohesive alternative organism in 2005, the FLOBOTS `good-fight' mythology can be traced via Denver's underground vines and creative community of the late `90s when various members enlivened each others' gigs and creative events, setting the charge that would eventually power up the band's contagious and rollicking rock/rap pedigree. Their rousing live show, seasoned by classically trained viola player Mackenzie Robert's innovative playing, sparked an impressive undertow of across-the-board support (including both coasts and off-the-grid territories such as Nebraska and Utah) as the group honed its glowing activist edge with a refreshingly positive message and bristling musicianship.

The prescient "Handlebars," currently holding down a coveted `Top request' slot at several key radio stations as well as being the Most Added at Alternative Radio, has placed FLOBOTS among the most buzzed-about newcomers in rock and rap circles. "'Handlebars' was written in the same way the group kind of blossomed," says Jonny 5. "I had a friend a few years ago who asked me if I ever tried to ride my bike with no handlebars. I hadn't, so I tried it. Got to thinking about all the other things I could do - we could do. The song came so fast to me I actually called my mom's answering machine to record the lyrics and make sure I got it all down. Of course it's also about how even our best intentions are laden with some sort of opposite. We like to think that FLOBOTS are about directing that positive energy into real change."

The song "is about the idea that we have so much incredible potential as human beings to be destructive or to be creative," Flobots' MC Jonny 5 (a.k.a. Jamie Laurie) told MTV. "And it's tragic to me that the appetite for military innovation is endless, but when it comes to taking on a project like ending world hunger, it's seen as outlandish. It's not treated with the same seriousness."

"...at the same time, I knew there were people at that moment who were being bombed by our own country. And I thought that was incredibly powerful." It is the contrast between these "little moments of creativity, these bursts of innovation," and the way these ideas are put to use "to oppress and destroy people" that the singer feels is both "beautiful and tragic at the same time."

music & video

The video for the song is partly rotoscoped and partly animated. It starts out lighthearted, showing two young friends riding their bikes without their hands on the handlebars. They arrive at a sign that points in two directions, one labeled with a corporate-like symbol, and the other labeled by a dove. They hug and head their separate ways.

The video's events escalate in tension and culminate in the corporate friend holding a dictator-like position of power, while the other friend has become a radical against him. The rebellious friend is shot and killed, along with all of the other followers, in front of the shocked corporate friend.

The video ends with a flashback of the two friends pedaling off riding with no handlebars crisscrossing into a bright light.

Several times in the video, the dove as a symbol is destroyed. Once an actual dove is killed by a hawk (Hawk being a common term for someone who favors a warlike stance, the same bird is seen flying over the corporate friend earlier in the video), simultaneously as a jetfighter flies overhead. The second time a wall with a dove painted on it, located next to a billboard displaying the corporate symbol, is destroyed by awrecking ball.

Another reference made within the video is to Che Guevara, an iconic revolutionist. This can be seen when the "good" friend is rallying a crowd, an image of Guevara's face appears on the yellow t-shirt on an overweight man.

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars

Look at me, look at me
hands in the air like it's good to be
ALIVE
and I'm a famous rapper
even when the paths're all crookedy
I can show you how to do-si-do
I can show you how to scratch a record
I can take apart the remote control
And I can almost put it back together
I can tie a knot in a cherry stem
I can tell you about Leif Ericson
I know all the words to "De Colores"
And "I'm Proud to be an American"
Me and my friend saw a platypus
Me and my friend made a comic book
And guess how long it took
I can do anything that I want cuz, look:

I can keep rhythm with no metronome
No metronome
No metronome

I can see your face on the telephone
On the telephone
On the telephone

Look at me
Look at me
Just called to say that it's good to be
ALIVE
In such a small world
All curled up with a book to read
I can make money open up a thrift store
I can make a living off a magazine
I can design an engine sixty four
Miles to a gallon of gasoline
I can make new antibiotics
I can make computers survive aquatic conditions
I know how to run a business
And I can make you wanna buy a product
Movers shakers and producers
Me and my friends understand the future
I see the strings that control the systems
I can do anything with no assistance
I can lead a nation with a microphone
With a microphone
With a microphone
I can split the atoms of a molecule
Of a molecule
Of a molecule

Look at me
Look at me
Driving and I won't stop
And it feels so good to be
Alive and on top
My reach is global
My tower secure
My cause is noble
My power is pure
I can hand out a million vaccinations
Or let'em all die in exasperation
Have'em all grilled leavin lacerations
Have'em all killed by assassination
I can make anybody go to prison
Just because I don't like'em and
I can do anything with no permission
I have it all under my command
I can guide a missile by satellite
By satellite
By satellite
and I can hit a target through a telescope
Through a telescope
Through a telescope
and I can end the planet in a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust
In a holocaust

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handle bars
No handlebars

I can ride my bike with no handlebars
No handlebars
No handlebars

Jay-Z - My 1st Song

Artist: Jay-Z

Song: My 1st Song

Album: The Black Album (2003)

Embodying the rags-to-riches rap dream, Jay-Z pulled himself up by his bootstraps as a youth to eventually become the reigning rapper of New York City and, in turn, a major-label executive following his short-lived retirement from music-making. In the wake of his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z's albums sold millions upon millions with each release, and his endless parade of hits made him omnipresent on urban radio and video television. He retained a strongly devoted fan base and challenged whatever rivals attempted to oust him from atop the rap game, more

If The Black Album is truly Jay-Z's last statement before retirement, he at least goes out near the top of his game. While it probably won't be remembered as his best album, The Black Album is his most personal to date and features some of his most compelling writing. Jay-Z is defiant and defensive here--he's trying to make sure his legacy is properly acknowledged, although he can get a bit heavy-handed at times. Still, he's rarely been more incisive or insightful in his rhymes, exposing his own childhood struggles on songs like "December 4th" while slapping at his haters with "What More Can I Say" and the cutting "Threat." Longtime Jay-Z collaborators Just Blaze and Kanye West churn out outstanding production, especially Blaze, whose beats for "December 4th" and "Public Service Announcement" are among the album's best. Newcomers Aqua and the Buchanans represent well also but Eminem's minor-key drone for "Moment of Clarity" is mired in mediocrity. Jay might fade to black after this one but his last shot doesn't miss. --Oliver Wang

"My 1st Song" is the last song on Jay-Z's The Black Album. In a sample of an interview with Biggie Smalls at the beginning of the song, the late rapper is heard saying he tries to "treat everything like it's [his] first project." Hence, the name of the song, which Jay-Z is apparently calling his "first song," even though it is the last song on what was to be his last album, as an allusion to what B.I.G. said in the interview.

The song describes Jay-Z growing up on the streets of New York; it was produced by Aqua and Joe "3H" Weinberger for HHH Artists.

My 1st Song" - The outro track, the one that defines the whole album, well, it defined it pretty damn good. Has a fitting beat with lyrical GOLD. Has a line from Notorious B.I.G at the beginning, which fits it very well. Basically, its short but to the point. The last minute or so is just Jay yelling out shout-outs like a typical outro-style track.

music

[Notorious B.I.G. interview]
I'm just, tryin to stay above water y'know
Just stay busy, stay workin
Puff told me like, the key to this joint
The key to staying, on top of things
is treat everything like it's your first project, knahmsayin?
Like it's your first day like back when you was an intern
Like, that's how you try to treat things like, just stay hungry

[Verse One: Jay-Z]
Uhh, uhh, yes, yes
Y'all wanna know, why he don't stop
Y'all wanna know, why he don't flop
Let me tell you pe-eople why
Came from the bottom of the block I
When I was born, it was sworn, I was never gon' be shit
Had to pull the opposite out this bitch
Had to get my ri-ide on
Eyes on the prize, Shawn knew I had to
Had to had to get these chips
Had to make moves like Olajuwon
Started out sellin dimes and nicks
Graduated to a brick
No exaggeration, my infatuation with the strip
Legendary like a schoolboy
Crushin merely nearly every every chick
Heavy shit - that's how schoolboy got whipped
And got left on some "Just +Me, Myself and I+"
On some Trugoy shit
Had your boys threw place up, to a place of no return
Had to play with fire and get burned
Only way the boy ever gon' learn
Had to lay way in the cut, 'til I finally got my turn
Now I'm on top in the spot that I earned

[Chorus]
It's my life - it's my pain and my struggle
The song that I sing to you it's my ev-ery-thing
Treat my first like my last, and my last like my first
And my thirst is the same as - when I came
It's my joy and my tears and the laughter it brings to me
It's my ev-ery-thing

[Verse Two: Jay-Z]
Like I never rode in a limo
Like I just dropped flows to a demo
Like it's ninety-two again and
And I got O's in the rental
Back in the Stu' again, no prob' livin was a whole lot simpler
When you think back, you thought that
you would never make it this far, then you
take advantage of the luck you handed
Or the talent, you been given
Ain't no, half steppin, ain't no, no slippin
Ain't no different from a block that's hidden
Gotta get it while the getting's good
Gotta strike while the iron's hot, 'fore you stop
Then you gotta bid it, good riddance
Goodbye, this is my second major breakup
My first was, with a pager
With a hooptie, a cookpot, and the GAME
This one's with the stool, with the stage, with the fortune
Maybe not the fortune, but certainly the FAME

[Chorus]
It's my life - my pain and my struggle
The song that I sing to you it's my ev-ery-thing
Treat my first like my last, and my last like my first
And my thirst is the same as - when I came
It's my joy and my tears and my laughter it brings to me
It's my ev-ery-thing
Treat my first like my last, and my last like my first
And my thirst like the first song I sang

[Outro: Jay-Z]
Woo! It's like the blues - we gon' ride out on this one
