Artist: Herman Dune

Song: 1 2 3 Apple Tree

Album: Giant (2006)

Product Description

2006 release from the Swedish outfit whose off-kilter Pop has attracted attention across the globe, even becoming one of John Peel's favorites in the last years of his life. Their influences range from Velvet Underground and Jonathan Richman to Neil Young and Sonic Youth with a little Paul Simon and The Stooges thrown in for good measure. Needless to say, they are hard to pigeon-hole, but easy to love! 16 tracks including 'I Wish That I Could See You Soon', 'Pure Hearts' and 'Baby Bigger'. Source Etc.

review

do, do, do do do, do
do, do, do do do, do
do, do do do do do

Oh, when you call me weird names and make all kinds of weird faces
when you drive me along to all the stupidest places
you know it's not fair, but you know what you do
because you know how bad I like to be with you

...And then you're like, "David, it's like one, two, three"
as you're climbing barefoot on the apple tree
it is as sweet as me, and as good as new
and you know how bad I like to be with you

You should try to go to some place, honey,
where the weather is hot, and the music is funny
you should try down south, by the magic Bayou
and you will know how bad I like to be with you

It's like the better path, and it's a better way
if we never part, and if we never stray
if we know we have each other to hang on to
and if you know how bad I like to be with you

When I'm home alone, and when I'm traveling far,
when I'm riding my bike and when I'm driving in my car,
it could be England or it could be Peru
and you would know how bad I like to be with you

Well you know better than me on all kinds of topics
like what fruit is native, what fruit is exotic,
you know the right names for flowers and for animals, too
I hope you know how bad I like to be with you

do do do, do, do, do do do, do
do, do, do do do, do
do, do do do do do

Well, you play the trumpet and I play drums
you smoke cigarettes and I chew gum,
you say we're different and I believe it's true
because you know how bad I like to be with you

It's not even an option,
it's not a matter of choice
I could say it with words
and I could say it with my voice
I could sing it in a song or play it on a kazoo
and you would know how bad I like to be with you

You say you dye your hair black since you were seventeen
and you say it goes well with your eyes so green
well, I'm losing my hair and my eyes are blue,
you know how bad I like to be with you

...And now you think you're puzzled,
and you don't understand me
well you can play me as easy as a DVD,
it's like solving a case with a single clue
to know how bad i like to be with you

You know I'll always like you no matter what
and if you get a little chubby,
and if you're a little too fat
if you worship Jesus when I am a Jew
then you will know how bad I like to be with you

...And you know how people shorten other people's names
to show their affection
like if you called me Ray, if my name was Raymond
well your name ain't Susan but I would call you Sue
to show you how bad I like to be with you

do do do, do, do, do do do, do
do, do, do do do, do
do, do, do do do, do
do, do do do

Michael Kamen - Bicycle Blues

Artist: Michael Kamen

Song: Bicycle Blues

Album: Let Him Have It

A spare, difficult score for a spare, difficult film about the murder of a British policeman by teenagers in the 1950s, and the resulting catastrophic trial that resulted. Kamen has deliberately kept the musical elements as minimal as possible, which works in the context of the film, if not in the context of a soundtrack album. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide

but the original song is Bicycle Boogie, by Bob Gaddy and Friends (1952)...

MC Abdominal - Pedal Pusher

Artist: MC Abdominal

Song: Pedal Pusher

Album: Escape From the Pigeon Hole (2008)

My space

Music

New album's called "Escape From the Pigeon Hole". First single is "Pedal Pusher" (produced by Young Einstein of Ugly Duckling), with B-side "Radio Friendly" (prod. by Cut Chemist formerly of Jurassic 5). The album's out already in Japan on Handcut records, dropping in UK/Europe sometime in April on Antidote, & is coming out in Canada March 27th on Do Right! music. Still working on the States & Australia...looking good, will keep you posted here.

Aside from Einstein & Cut, there's also production on there from Format & Fase (of course), as well as Circle Research, DJ Serious, Bird, Phat Tony, Jus Cuz, + a special collabo with my boys Notes to Self. Also, all kinds of sick cuts throughout from 2003 world DMC champ, DJ Dopey.

I'm really hyped & excited to finally get this out...been working on it for the better part of 2 years! For everyone inquiring about shows/touring...all that should be getting underway very soon after the album drops. The only thing confirmed thus far is Japan for the first half of April, but I should know about everywhere else soon...again, will keep you posted here.

Finally...website. Just bought a domain name & should have something up soon. You guessed it...I'll keep you posted here. That's it, that's all...thanks everybody for all your support, Abs.

Note on new "PedalWorkout" Remix EP

We had a remix contest for my track “Pedal Pusher” on myspace a while back. The point was to eventually release the winner’s entry. We ended up getting so many good entries however, that we decided we had to include a few of the runners-up as well. So this little remix EP you’re about to (hopefully) download includes said winner (The Plain Ensemble, hailing from Eugene, Oregon), as well as 2 other mixes…1 from The Commonwealth (a production duo out of Toronto & Chicago respectively), & the other from DJ Maniphest (who’s from Milton Keynes, over in the UK). We also included a live version of the tune, recorded with my new band, “The Obliques”. And then, just because we’re good sports, we’ve also tacked on a few other hard to find remixes & tidbits. You’ve got remixes for “Abdominal Workout” from both Natural Self and Jellybass, as well as “Satan Music” (a tune which came out as the bonus cut on a UK only 12”, that had a run of about 80), & “Beatbox Shit” (up for a Grammy this year in the “most creative song title” category…fingers crossed!!), which has never before seen the light of day. So buy the tracks individually, as you see fit, or take the plunge & shell out for the whole shebang (& enjoy a whopping savings of: 0 cents). Regardless, thanks for the support…yours, Abs (aka the guy who’s too broke to hire someone to write these kinds of things for him).

Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra - Nine Doors

Artist: Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra

Album: Nine Doors (2010)

Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. That’s gotta be one of he best band names of all time.Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. It’s so satisfying to say. It’s almost as satisfying to type out, time and again. Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. The best thing about the name is that it’s wholly accurate: Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra are a troop of musicians based in a certain district of Manchester who come together to make music from all kinds of instruments, including bicycles. They’ve been a going concern for a few years now, but this is their debut release; a full-length CD album (or download if you’re so inclined) capturing nine of their collective improvisations for posterity and general confusion.

“Marlon. Marlon Brando are you the famous film star?”

And he says, “yes I’m afraid I am.”

“Why aren’t you happy with your existence?”

“Well that’s the question isn’t it?”

Confusion? Yes. It’s not like they don’t warn you: open up the beautifully packaged CD, pull out the bonkers fold-out poster and look on the back; you’re confronted with what reads like the ramblings of an insane man and a small disclaimer: “All lyrics improvised at time of recording and sung by Zeke S Clough”. Pity the fool that volunteered to transcribe them.

Zeke S. Clough (voice, synthesizer, percussion), perhaps better known for his insane artwork for Skull Disco that also adorns this release, is just one of the quartet of fearless improvisers that make up Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. Huw T. Wahl (bicycle percussion, clarinet, piano, voice), David M. (for Magnus) Birchall (bass, small instruments, percussion, voice) and Josh J. Kopecek (synthesizer, piano, flugelhorn) are the other constituent parts that make up this glorious whole.

So what is the sound of confusion? The album opens up with some typically deranged moans from Zeke, before some clattering of bicycle percussion, fizzing pedals and rhythmic random percussion. This builds up to a point of tension before Zeke begins his first sermon, quickly accompanied by bass thrums and other assorted layers before it all collapses into the next song. “Starved Dog” features a piano accompanying what sounds like someone playing a bass guitar with a slide, a kazoo and god knows what else. “Oily Film” features what sounds like the ghost of crazed organist playing the soundtrack toChopper Chicks in Zombietown, accompanied by creaks, groans and moans and the odd whoop here and there. “Whale in a Duckpond” almost sounds like an actual, recognisable song at various points, with some welcome musicality as David plays the bass like an upright and Zeke croons in his best Geno Washington impersonation. Then it all goes wrong; maggots start crawling over the windows and hell gradually breaks loose. “Marlon Brando”? Well, you know how that one goes. Everything starts falling apart by the time we reach “Primate Engineer” and Huw’s clarinet starts wailing over the top of abstract piano phrases, phased bass rumbles and some beatboxing. Eventually it all comes to a crashing, triumphant halt with final track “Nine Doors”, which runs a full 20 minutes and encapsulates virtually everything that precedes it, mutating from broken-down church organ jam to skeletal percussion workout to bizarre melody hopscotch, all held together by another bizarre, nonsensical story. A glorious hymn to the power of collective free improvisation, it’s probably the finest moment on this fantastically cock-eyed album.

“Nine Doors” is the sound of what happens when you lock four like-minded musical voyagers in a room for 2 days and distill their inevitable improvisations down to something that approaches the coherent “music” your lazy brain desires. Live, Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra must sprawl all over the place as they take different paths towards collective enlightenment. On record, you’re served the mere highlights of their wanderings, jumbled-up and thrown together to create this mind-flaying assemblage of sounds, textures, noises, words and song. Running nicely over an hour, it might be too much to take in at one sitting, but keep listening and it’s the collective inspiration that frazzles your mind. Awesomely inspired and dazzlingly weird, simply nothing sounds like Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra.

LBO are out in the mainland of Europe right now blowing minds night after night. If you’re anywhere near anywhere they’re playing, I suggest you take a trip and check them out:

Gosta Ekman - Isabella (Daisy Bell)

Artist: Gosta Ekman

Song: Isabella

Alma Rek wrote Daisy Bell lyrics in Swedish, as Isabella, recorded by Gösta Ekman, who had a 1929 hit with this version of the song. (…)

Jag har en blomma på hjärtats grund,
Isabella.
Född av en blick i en månskensstund,
blick från min Isabell.
Fast jag vet ej om du vill med mej
gå under brudepäll,
vill jag dock giva mitt liv för dej,
förtjusande Isabell.

Isabella,
skänk nu mitt hjärta tröst,
låt nu gälla
kärlekens milda röst.
Vi kunna förtroligt språka
fast ej i vagn vi åka:
Ty du kan få
en plats ändå,
på min bicykel gjord för två.

Som äkta makar på livets stråt,
Isabella,
hjula vi skulle med fröjd framåt.
Jag och min Isabell.
Ingen polis skull oss hejda då
ty i den mörka kväll
lyste vår färd dina ögon blå,
min strålande Isabell!

Isabella,
skänk åt mitt hjärta tröst,
låt nu gälla
kärlekens ljuva röst.
Vi kunna så härligt språka
fast ej i vagn vi åka:
ty du kan få
en plats ändå,
på min bicykel gjord för två.

Men om en fara oss hota må -
Isabella,
då skall med pinglan du passa på:
Pling, Pling, Pling, Plang, Isabell!
Jag tar den kurs som dig synes bäst
Och - är du riktigt snäll,
ska´ - du få styra båd karl och häst.
min tjusande Isabell!

Isabella,
skänk åt mitt hjärta tröst,
låt nu gälla
kärlekens ljuva röst.
Vi kunna så härligt språka
fast ej i vagn vi åka:
Ty du kan få
en plats ändå,
på min bicykel gjord för två.

Beatrice Kay (April 21, 1907, New York City – November 8, 1986) was an American singer, vaudevillian, music hall performer, stage and film actress. She died in North Hollywood, California, aged 79.

From Wikipedia:

"Daisy Bell" was composed by Harry Dacre in 1892. As David Ewen writes in American Popular Songs: “When Dacre, an English popular composer, first came to the United States, he brought with him a bicycle, for which he was charged duty. His friend (the songwriter William Jerome) remarked lightly: 'It's lucky you didn't bring a bicycle built for two, otherwise you'd have to pay double duty.' Dacre was so taken with the phrase 'bicycle built for two' that he decided to use it in a song. That song, Daisy Bell, first became successful in a London music hall, in a performance by Katie Lawrence. Tony Pastor was the first one to sing it in the United States. Its success in America began when Jennie Lindsay brought down the house with it at the Atlantic Gardens on the Bowery early in 1892.”

It is said that the song was inspired by Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick, a British socialite and mistress of King Edward VII.

Brand New biography

From the new album Daisy out September 22, 2009

Brand New's ability to jump between quiet textures and grating, full-throttle passages has been the centerpiece of several albums, but the Long Island boys revisit that formula once again with DAISY. The band's fourth LP begins rather formally, as a classical piano plays beneath a female's prim and proper vocals. Drums, screams, and squelching guitars eventually gatecrash the piano recital, but the effect isn't jarring as much as it is familiar, a tell-tale sign of a band not quite ready to ditch its old habits. Yet despite DAISY's familiar tricks, the band's rage is still fairly convincing, and a handful of slower songs hint at what may lie ahead for future albums. "Bed" is quietly sinister, a minor-key ballad more devoted to nuance and suspense than pure aggression, and "You Stole" is downright gorgeous at points, its fuzzy guitars finding some sort of connection between My Bloody Valentine and '50s surf rock. Brand New may not be completely comfortable with the slow stuff, but DAISY's willingness to experiment is what makes the album so interesting, even as its furious rock songs continue to pack a punch.Rolling Stone (p.75) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[The] album avoids genre commonplaces with subtle shadings -- here some Modest Mouse-style whine, there some warped blues riffs."
Spin (p.74) - "[With] jagged art-punk riffs that routinely explode without warning. The sound is old-fashioned, but the fury is fresh."
Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "Frontman Jesse Lacey can scream; he also packs a poison-drip whisper....An investigation of future stylistic destinations." -- Grade: B
Alternative Press (p.116) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] record that feels half-improvised at times and brutally raw throughout. It's sonically akin to Nirvana's IN UTERO..."

From the site Dance Band Encyclopedia:

Gerald Adams was a trained singer (a tenor) who was called upon occasionally to provide vocals on dance bands recordings for house bands, though he was much more at home singing ballads than “pop” tunes. He recorded a handful of vocals for Stan Greening at Regal (issued as Lido Dance Orchestra or Raymond Dance Band) and also at Edison Bell with their house band.

The same site reports that Stan Greening began recording at Regal Records in 1925 as well as the following information:

In the 1920s Stan Greening was responsible for hundreds of dance band recordings for a number of different record labels, such as Imperial, Columbia, Regal, Mimosa, HMV, Parlophone, Edison Bell Winner and Duophone.

There is a flower within my heart
Daisy, Daisy
Planted one day by a glancing Dad
Planted by daisy bell
Whether she loves me or loves me not
Sometimes it's hard to tell
Yet I am longing to share the lot
A beautiful daisy bell

CHORUS:
Daisy, Daisy give me your heart to do
I'm half crazy, hopeful in love with you
It won't be a stylish marraige
I can't afford the carriage
But you look sweet upon the street
On a bicycle built for two

We will go tandem as man and wife
Daisy, Daisy
Peddling our way down the road of life
I and my daisy bell
When the roads and we both dispise
Please men the lambs as well
There are bright lights in those dasling ice
A beautiful daisy bell

REPEAT CHORUS

I'll stand by you in wear or well Daisy, Daisy
You'll be the bell we'll try to rip you know
Sweet little daisy bell, You'll take the lead in each trip we take
And if I dropped out, I will say here's the drink by beautiful daisy bell

REPEAT CHORUS (x2)

But you look sweet upon the street
On a bicycle built for two
On a bicycle built for two
On a bicycle built for two

The song "Daisy Bell" is a B-side on CD 2 of Sunday Sunday Blur single of 1993. Singer Damon Albarn once mentioned that he would like to make music his grandparents would approve of. Graham Coxon has admitted that the cover versions of "Daisy Bell" and "Let's All Go Down The Strand" were one of the worst moments in Blur's career.

On a bicycle built for two
On a bicycle built for two
On a bicycle built for two
For two, For two, For two, For two

Yves Montand - A' Bicyclette

Artist: Yves Montand

Song: à Bicyclette

Album: La Bicyclette (1968)

Yves Montand (13 October 1921 - 9 November 1991) was an Italian-born French actor and singer.

Lay said, “At that time, it was Barouh’s idea or rather mine to make a recording with a singer! For this 45 single, Pierre one day entrusted me a text entitled “The Bicycle”. The words immediately inspired me. By visualizing these characters who pedal on country

lanes, I found the gimmick intro, a sentence in loop, like the movement of a bicycle’s chain. I recorded a sample where I interpreted the song myself. Pierre borrowed the cassette from me and carried with him on holiday to Saint-Paul-of-Vence. Over there he meets

Montand and makes him listen to this small sample. Immediately, Yves Montand says to him: “Okay, I’ll take it!” And here is how Montand discovered “The Bicycle” and made a success of it that myself as an interpreter, I would never have obtained!

--Philippe Margotin

Paroles: Pierre Barouh, Francis Lay

Quand on partait de bon matin
Quand on partait sur les chemins
A bicyclette
Nous étions quelques bons copains
Y avait Fernand y avait Firmin
Y avait Francis et Sébastien
Et puis Paulette

On était tous amoureux d'elle
On se sentait pousser des ailes
A bicyclette
Sur les petits chemins de terre
On a souvent vécu l'enfer
Pour ne pas mettre pied à terre
Devant Paulette

Faut dire qu'elle y mettait du cœur
C'était la fille du facteur
A bicyclette
Et depuis qu'elle avait huit ans
Elle avait fait en le suivant
Tous les chemins environnants
A bicyclette

Quand on approchait la rivière
On déposait dans les fougères
Nos bicyclettes
Puis on se roulait dans les champs
Faisant naître un bouquet changeant
De sauterelles, de papillons
Et de rainettes

Quand le soleil à l'horizon
Profilait sur tous les buissons
Nos silhouettes
On revenait fourbus contents
Le cœur un peu vague pourtant
De n'être pas seul un instant
Avec Paulette

Prendre furtivement sa main
Oublier un peu les copains
La bicyclette
On se disait c'est pour demain
J'oserai, j'oserai demain
Quand on ira sur les chemins
A bicyclette
