Brad Paisley - 364 Days To Go

Artist: Brad Paisley
Titolo:
364 Days To Go

Album: Christmas (1989)

Brad Douglas Paisley (born October 28, 1972) is a Grammy Award-winning American country music singer-songwriter and guitarist.

A worthy addition to the country Christmas collection, this succinctly titled album combines respect for tradition with contemporary inspiration. "Winter Wonderland" features a Western swing arrangement and country references in the lyrics, "Away in a Manger" has a Cajun feel, and the "Jingle Bells" instrumental benefits from an injection of rockabilly twang (as does Paisley's revival of Buck Owens's "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy"). Among the original material that distinguishes the collection, "Penguin, James Penguin" is like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" for the higher-tech generation, as Santa enlists a "secret-agent bird" to keep computerized tabs on who deserves what. "Born on Christmas Day" features a tape of a song Paisley wrote and initially recorded when he was 13, then segues into the artist today on the same tune. The album closes with a slam at political correctness on "Kung Pao Buckaroo Holiday," with the Kung Pao Buckaroos (a.k.a. George Jones, Bill Anderson, and "Little" Jimmy Dickens) discovering that they get bleeped every time they mention "Chxxxxmas." --Don McLeese

"364 Days to Go" is lazy, jazzy, which provides the perfect soundtrack to a snowy night wrapping presents.

“less colorful is the laconic "364 Days to Go" a wry cynical bluesy-ballad about the obsessive entanglements of the holidays”.

review

Wrapping paper everywhere
Stacked up dishes, but who cares
They can wait until tomorrow now
It`s you and me, and this old couch

The Christmas tree in our living room
Fills the AIR with pine perfume
And colored lights dancing on the walls
While Nat King Cole sings "Deck The Halls"

Don`t you get the sense tonight
That for now the world is right
And as another Christmas ends
My mind drifts and once again
I`m thinking like a six year old
Only 364 days to go

Max got his bike
I swear, that kid
He`s got it parked right by his bed
Jenny sure loves her puppy too
I`m not sure just who walked who

Thanks for my robe, no that`s ok
It looks better on you anyway
What is it about this time of year
That makes our troubles disappear

`Cause don`t you get the sense tonight
That for now the world is right
And as another Christmas ends
My mind drifts and once again
I`m thinking like a six year old
Only 364 days to go

We can`t avoid it
No way around it
Before too long we`ll be
Either back to work back to school
Or just back to reality

Don`t you get the sense tonight
That for now the world is right
And as another Christmas ends
My mind drifts and once again
I`m thinking like a six year old
Only 364 days to go

Be here before you know it.

John Linnell - South California

Artist: John Linnell
Titolo:
South Carolina

Album: State Songs (1999)

John Linnell (of They Might Be Giants) delivers 16 songs, each based on a different U.S. state: This is the same recording as South Carolina (Hello EP) (1994), but mixed differently.

South Carolina is about a bike crash, but there's a creepy overtone about crashing intentionally to try to collect insurance money; it’s a song about getting rich in the mythical American way: getting hurt and suing someone. (In this case, by being in a bicycle accident.) TMBG's Dial-A-Song service was created after John Linnell himself was injured in a bicycle accident.

The service started in late 1983, back when TMBG's hopping around the early 80's NYC punk scene hit an unexpected snag—John Linnell broke his wrist in a biking accident and John Flansburgh had his new Brooklyn apartment thoroughly burglarized. Despite being unable to perform, they wanted to keep the band's momentum going, and thus Dial-A-Song was born.

The other day my neighbor has a dented bike

Second day he called me from intensive care

Says he needs a picture of the dented bike

For the evidence of what a wreck he had

Lift that fork, eat that snail

Garçon summon up a new cocktail

Crash my bicycle

Crash my bicycle

In a big South Carolina wreck

I crash my bicycle

Crash my bicycle

Crash my bicycle

In a big South Carolina wreck

I crash my bicycle

And I won some damages and they were punitive

By which I mean the punishment was damaging

It crushed my hand

It crushed my head

Garçon, where's my drink?

Wreck!

Observe the front wheel spinning upside down

Wreck!

The red reflector fragments strewn around

Wreck!

The back wheel's 'O' is now a letter 'D'

Wreck!

I was an 'I' and now I am a 'V'

Lift that fork, eat that snail

Garçon summon up a new cocktail

Lift that fork, eat that snail

Garçon summon up a new cocktail

Crash my bicycle

Crash my bicycle

In a big South Carolina wreck

I crash my bicycle

Crash my bicycle

Crash my bicycle

In a big South Carolina wreck

I crash my bicycle

If I had to do it all again, by bicycle

If I had to do it, I would crash my bicycle

I'd crush my head

Collect the bread

Crash my bicycle

XTC - I'd Like That

Artist: XTC

Song: I’d Like That

Album: Apple Venus Volume 1 (1999)

The first XTC album after a six-year hiatus opens with the plink of a water drop, just a hint of the musical downpour to come. Add an interplay with a plucked cello and the low pulse of French horns, and soon Apple Venus Volume One bursts into a festival of symphonic excess. Wedding Andy Partridge's impeccable, overtime-working pop senses to the warmth and lushness of acoustic orchestral arrangements is an inspired move, not only recasting XTC's long career, but resulting in one of the year's most splendorous recordings. The single “I’d Like That”, a catchy love song, has fun with wordplay and a good chugging beat.

"I'd Like That" - a lusty dream of a more salicious and delicious sort - bangs in the acoustic instruments and innuendos.

I’d like that if we could cycle down some lane
I’d like that if we could ride into the rain
No macs, getting wet
I’d be your albert if youd be victoria, hah hah
Wed laugh because each drop would make me grow up
Really high, really high like a really high thing
Say, a sunflower

Id like that

Id like that (what would you like? ) if we could lay before my fire
Id like that (what would you like? ) if you could slide me from this wire
Toasting fork, Ill be done
I wouldnt hector if youd be helen of troy, oh boy
Wed laugh because each flame would make me grow up
Really high, really high like a really high thing
Say, a sunflower

Id like that

Id smile so much my face would crack in two
And you could fix it with your kissing glue
Id like that
Yes, Id like that

Id like that (what would you like? ) if we could float away in bed
Id like that (what would you like? ) if I could row your heart and head
With you laid on one arm
Id be your nelson if youd be my hamilton, what fun
Wed laugh because each stroke would make me grow up
Really high, really high like a really high thing
Say, a sunflower (repeats)

Say a sunflower I became
Id be growing in your lane

Gonna take my bike out

Gonna take my bike

Gonna ride it slowly

Gonna ride just how I like

Leave we way up here

(Gonna take my bike out)

(Gonna take my bike)

(Gonna ride it slowly)

Up on the mountain

(Gonna ride just how I like)

Let me lie

(Gonna take my bike out)

(Gonna take my bike)

(Gonna ride it slowly)

Uncovered on the floor

(Gonna ride just how I like)

Make me wonder when

You go away when

If you’re ever coming

Back here anymore

I don’t care what you did

But I can tell it’s hanging over you

The effects of sun and sand

Are hard to understand

Gonna take my bike out

Gonna take my bike

(Let me lie)

Gonna ride it slowly

Gonna ride just how I like

(Let me lie)

Gonna use my brakes

When I go downhill

Gonna climb back on

When I take a spill

Gonna peel my shirt off

Gonna feel it burn

Gone keep my eyes closed

Gonna miss my turn

Codeine - Jr

Artist: Codeine

Song: Jr

Album: Barely Real (Ep 1992)

The early-'90s New York trio Codeine is one of the founders of the slowcore scene. Taking audible inspiration from the third Velvet Underground album and scene pioneers Galaxie 500, but adding a more aggressive tone and slowing the tempos down even further, Codeine sounded almost entirely unique at the time. However, their style was immediately adopted by a number of other new bands, some of which do the tense and glacial thing even better.

Threw my bike off the road
And lie in the grass
The hot winds blow
Promises I'll never know

Dumb at twelve
With a delinquent mind
The sky turned yellow-blue
Like a week-old bruise

These days things loom above me
My head is empty
My tongue and lips
Are swollen

Wake me up
Sunray
On this bright sunny summerday
Leave my bed
Bike in head
Clear blue sky
Bird and kite
On this day
Time is on my side
Someone said
Bike in head
On a shadow lane
Between big trees
Bike-chain spins
And frame freezes
I have seen the vilages in green
Meadows cut by ditches in between
Lines I've read
Bike in head
Can't you hear
Can't you hear what they say
Can't you hear
Artis bought an elephant today
Wake me up
Sun-ray
On this bright sunny summerday
Leave my bed
Bike in head
Is this the real world!
Am I alive
Is this the real world!
Am I alive
Is this the real world!
Is this the real world!

Album: Libido Speedway (1997)

This is incredible album that has only circled in the lively alternative rock scene. The album is fueled by a driving bass matched in intensity by the drums, guitar, and vocals. An absolute must-have for those who appreciate the higher end of the indie-rock music genre.

Kelsea, won't you come out to play
I got my bicycle today
My father bought it for me
He said it cost him money
He's got a man in China
Who says he gets them cheaply
It's got a magic handle
It's got a chromed up fender
It's got a sprocket card and
It's got some superpowers

What a pretty bicycle she said
I want one just like that

Amiri won't you hear my song
I make it up as I go along
It's about a man in China
Who's got a wife and family
He sells his stuff for money
To feed his starving family
They got them fifteen babies
There's not a girl among them
He's got some super powers (2x)

What a pretty song he said
I want one just like that (2x)

Kelsea won't you come out tonight
Your body's burning just like mine
These are the things I bought you
These are the words I taught you
You've got a phony body
I want to touch so badly
I want to get so dirty
I want to give you money
I want to take your body
Tell me, I'll know

what a pretty song she said
I want one just like that(2x)

José Gonzalez - Cycling Trivialities

Artist: José Gonzalez

Song: Cycling Trivialities

Album: In Our Nature (2007)

Names like Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, and Tim Buckley are often used together, not necessarily to describe one exact sonic style of singer, but more as incredibly passionate verbs, to identify the strong emotions evoked when listening to these late legends' sparse melodies. Swedish-based Argentinian musician José González is likely to hear those classic names a lot in his future. González received critical underground love from his 2003 debut disc Veneer, but garnered more widespread attention as a guest vocalist for downtempo group Zero 7. The singer's gentle vocals and Spanish-meets-classical guitar style make a quietly compelling match, especially so on his sophomore CD In Our Nature, easily the best work--either as a solo or contributing vocalist--that he has released to date. The track that may well attract the most new eardrums is his sparse, whisper-soft cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop" (a.k.a., the theme song to the TV show House), but many of his own tunes are equally endearing. War and world leaders were clearly on his mind when writing this disc, from opener "How Low"--in which González sings "Invasion after invasion/This means war/Someday you'll be up to your knees/in the shit you seek"--to the flamenco-affected track, "Killing for Love." All of these poignant--and at times pointed--lyrics are surrounded in lush, yet sparse melodies that make for music that is truly praise-worthy, bordering on timeless. --Denise Sheppard

Some opinions about “Cycling Trivialities” (from last.fm):

This song is so amazing,it's hard to describe. So sad,so true...You got to love it.

Anyone else get goosebumps listening to this?

Amazing song.. cant never get enough of his voice & guitar.

Like a quiet earth quake. Like a silent tornado.

He's the only songwriter that makes me temporary forget Elliott Smith. And this song a perfect end for “In our nature”.

…and "Cycling Trivialities", the latter ends the album on a poignant yet sincerely depressing vibe, attacking the ultimately trivial and futile self-centred nature in himself and those around him- "So, where's this leaving me? Recycling trivialities". This culmination sees a solution to the building tensions and problems depicted throughout the album. It may be a dark and ultimately depressing solution, but in a strange way it gives a wonderful sense of completion, of almost peace within the dark resolve.

review ...closer "Cycling Trivialities" shows González at his most vulnerable, with a stream of plangent notes bubbling out from an unaccompanied guitar, and while the song's sense of futility-- capping off an album heavy with the stuff-- gets pretty powerful, an extended outro and the awkward title phrase itself find González in a rare moment of unwarranted excess.

Too blind to know your best.
Hurrying through the forks without regrets.
Different now, every step feels like a mile.
All the lights seem to flash and pass you by.

So how's it gonna be.
When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities.

Don't know which way to turn.
Every trifle becoming big concerns.
All this time you were chasing dreams,
without knowing what you wanted them to mean.

So how's it gonna be.
When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities.
So how's it gonna be.
When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities.

Who cares in a hundred years from now.
All the small steps, all your shitty clouds.
Who cares in a hundred years from now.
Who'll remember all the players.
Who'll remember all the clowns.

So how's it gonna be.
When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities.

So what does this really mean.
When it all comes down you're cycling trivialities.
Cycling trivialities.

not really a Christmas song ...

Quite often I get a thinking
How as kids we got by
Like christmas time in our house
We couldn't even afford a fire

But we made do in our house
Back then when I was young
Dad used to suck a peppermint
And we'd all sit round his tongue

We couldn't afford no tinsel
On our christmas tree
So we'd just wheel old grandad in
And make the old cunt sneeze...atchoo

Wheel him round the other side granny...atchoo

Well things change so bloody fast
I got children now of me own
Now I heard 'em unwrap their presents
Last night when I got home

Santa claus you cunt
Where's my fucking bike
I've unwrapped all this other junk
There's nothing what i like

I've wrote you a letter
And i've come to see you twice
You geriatric wanker
Where's my fucking bike

If i wanted a pair of fucking shoes
I would've fucking asked
This cowboy suit and ping-pong set
You can stick right up your arse

You went and mucked my order up
It's enough to make you spew
It's not just me that's pissed off
My sister's cheesed off too

Santa claUs you cunt
Where's my fucking pram
You promised me you fucking cunt
You know who I am

'Cos I'm the little girl
You made sit right on your hand
Never mind your ho ho ho
Where's my fucking pram

Next time i go to see him
I'm gonna punch him in the guts
Set his fucking reindeer loose
Kick rudolf in the nuts

Just you wait til next year
'Til we get to that store
A mate of my little sister
'll come stomping through that door

Hey mums and dads just check his breath
And watch his bloodshot eyes
Don't listen to him boys and girls
'Cos he tells fucking lies

He's a pisstake and a pervert
He's not even fucking bright
'Cos that fucking wanker
Forgot my fucking bike

Hey santa claus you cunt
Where's my fucking bike
I've unwrapped all this other junk
There's nothing what I like

I wrote you a fucking letter
And I came to see you twice
You geriatric wanker
Forgot my fucking bike

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'

Artist: Lynyrd Skynyrd

Song: Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin’

Album: Christmas Time Again (2000)

It's a long way from Jacksonville, Florida, to the North Pole, but first generation Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd put antifreeze in the old touring van and set a course for Santa's workshop with this seasonal outing. The band, which now consists of three founders and a handful of later recruits, mix Yule warhorses ("Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Greensleeves") and more recent fare ("Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'," "Run Run Rudolph," Eddie C. Campbell's customized-for-Christmas take on "Messin' with the Kid") with a smattering of originals. Guests Charlie Daniels and .38 Special check in with one song apiece, giving the whole project a kind of TV variety-show feel--that is, if you can picture a bearded Perry Como with a stack of Marshall amps at his back. --Steven Stolder

Being a Skynyrd fan for over 20 years, I must say this is one Skynyrd CD that came as a big surprise for me. My wife surprised me with it and I had to take a double look at the CD cover. A Skynyrd Christmas CD I asked myself? Very cool, man. I have a lot of Christmas CDs. All of those wonderful classics from the 60's and up that I enjoy so much around this time of the year. But it's really great to see a CD from a band that I am such a big fan of put a CD out that have great Christmas classics done Skynyrd style. I put the "Christmas Time Again" CD on right away and loved it right from the start. This is going to a rock'n Christmas. Keep rock'n Skynyrd and Merry Christmas! Live to Ride, Ride to Live.

Now Mama's in the kitchen cookin'
And her children are fast asleep
It's time for Santa Claus to make his midnight creep cause
Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'
Santa Claus wants some lovin'
I know there's something real pretty
Underneath that christmas tree
But I ain't had no lovin' and it's wearin' me cause
Santa Claus wants some lovin'
Santa Claus wants some lovin'
Now I been trying to fix this old bicycle
Can't seem to find my pliers
Halfway watchin' Mama for that sleep in her eyes cause
Santa Claus wants some lovin'
Santa Claus wants some lovin'
I don't want no turkey
Don't care about no cake
I want you to come here Mama 'fore the children wake cause
Santa Claus wants some lovin'
Santa Claus wants some lovin'
Now christmas is for the children
And I want them to be real pleased
But right now Mama it's christmas eve
Come make your Papa happy please
Santa Claus wants some lovin'
Santa Claus wants some lovin'

The Magnetic Fields - The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side

Artist: The Magnetic Fields

Song: The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side

Album: 69 Love Songs (1999)

The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side appears on the album 69 Love Songs (disc 1). The Magnetic Fields is a New York-based group, a band led by New York City singer-songwriter Stephin Merritt.

In his songs, Merritt has an affinity for the outsiders and outcasts. His protagonist in
The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side" an Irving Berlin-inspired song, is also the
Ugliest Guy on the Lower East Side, and he knows the pretty girl he loves is just using him
for a bike ride…
A beauty and the beast song, from the perspective of the beast!

"The Lower East Side is the epicenter of songwriting history in the 20th Century," says Stephin Merritt in the 69 Love Songs booklet. Which is why he lives and works there. Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, many Tin Pan Alley writers, and (more recently) John Zorn have all come from the Lower East Side, an area of Manhattan that was popular with many immigrant populations, especially Jewish radicals, early in the century.

The song has been covered by Norwegian duo, the Kings of Convenience, though their version is not on general release.

A
ndy would bicycle across town
in the rain to bring you candy
and John would buy the gown
for you to wear to the prom
with Tom, the astronomer
who would name a star for you
but I’m the luckiest guy
on the lower east side
cuz i got wheels
and you want to go for a ride

harry, is the one I think you'll marry
but it's chris that you kissed after school
well I’m a fool
there's no doubt
but when the sun comes out
and only when the sun comes out
I’m the luckiest guy
on the lower east side
cuz ive got wheels
and you want to go for a ride
the day is beautiful and so are you
my car is ugly but then, im ugly too
i know you'd never give me a second glance
when the weathers nice all the other guys
don't stand a chance
i know professor ***
makes you feel like a woman
but when the wind is in your hair you laugh like a little girl
so you share secrets with lou
but we've got secrets too
well one, i only keep this heap for you
cuz im the ugliest guy on the lower east side
cuz i've got wheels
and you want to go for a ride

Broken bicycles, old busted chains
With rusted handle bars, out in the rain
Somebody must have an orphanage for
All these things that nobody wants any more
September's reminding July
It's time to be saying goodbye
Summer is gone, but our love will remain
Like old broken bicycles out in the rain

Broken bicycles, don't tell my folks
ThereÕs all those playing cards pinned to the spokes
Laid down like skeletons out on the lawn
The wheels won't turn when the other has gone
The seasons can turn on a dime
Somehow I forget every time
For all the things that you've given me will always stay
Broken, but I'll never throw them away

Belle and Sebastian - Fox in the Snow

Artist: Belle and Sebastian

Song: Fox in the Snow

Album: If You’re Feeling Sinister (1997)

There are several schools of thought about Syd Barrett, the early leader of Pink Floyd. Some think he was a genius songwriter, even when he was utterly whacked out. Others think he was just a druggie tosspot (those people are wrong). If you subscribe to the former school, you need to hear Belle and Sebastian, who seem to inhabit a musical universe close to Syd's. Songs seem to fly off the cuff, as attractive as a summer day when you were 16. We're not talking self-conscious strangeness here, but just natural, organic weirdness with melodies that make these songs work. --Chris Nickson

The Scottish group Belle & Sebastian has delivered an impressive amount of high quality music in the decade or so that they've been around, and most people will argue that IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER is their best work to date.

Fox in the snow, where do you go
To find something you can eat?
Cause the word out on the street is you are starving
Dont let yourself grow hungry now
Dont let yourself grow cold
Fox in the snow

Girl in the snow, where will you go
To find someone that will do?
To tell someone all the truth before it kills you
They listen to your crazy laugh
Before you hang a right
And disappear from sight
What do they know anyway?
You’ll read it in a book
What do they know anyway?
You’ll read it in a book tonight

Boy on the bike, what are you like
As you cycle round the town?

You’re going up, youre going down
You’re going nowhere
It’s not as if theyre paying you
It’s not as if its fun
At least not anymore
When your legs are black and blue
It’s time to take a break
When your legs are black and blue
It’s time to take a holiday

Kid in the snow, way to go
It only happens once a year
It only happens once a lifetime
Make the most of it
Second just to being born
Second to dying to
What else could you do?

The Pale Fountains - Bicycle Thieves

Artist: The Pale Fountains

Song: Bicycle Thieves

Album: From Across the Kitchen Table (1985)

“Across the kitchen table” shows one of the most influencial singer, songwriters in recent (ish) times doing what he does best! Jean's not happening is an indie classic, way before it's time, it belongs in the baggy early 1990's Manchester. A piece of rare british musical history!

A leading proponent of the "quiet pop" movement of the early 1980s, the Pale Fountains formed in Liverpool, England in 1981. They debuted in 1982 on the Operation Twlight label with the single "(There's Always) Something on My Mind," which generated such a posititve buzz that they were immediately signed by Virgin for the then-staggering sum of 150,000 pounds. However, their label debut, the lavish "Thank You," failed to crack the U.K. Top 40, despite a heavy promotional push. After an intense year in the studio, the Pale Fountains' first LP, the bossa nova-inflected Pacific Street, finally appeared in 1984; after such a relatively long absence from the limelight, the group had lost its status as media darlings, and the record fared poorly. Producer Ian Broudie was brought in to helm 1985's ...from across the kitchen table, but again success was not forthcoming; in the wake of considerable acrimony amongst the band and their label, the Pale Fountains soon split, with Head returning to Liverpool to form Shack with his brother John.

Cracker - I Ride My Bike

Artist: Cracker

Song: I Ride My Bike

Album: Tucson “EP” (1992), Kerosene Hat (1993)

Kerosene Hat is Cracker's second album, released on August 24, 1993. It reached #1 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart, and #59 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The ghost track n.88 is “I Ride My Bike”, previously included on "Tucson" EP.

Many alternative-rock fans considered Camper Van Beethoven an important band, but I wasn't among them. Guitarist/vocalist David Lowerey always seemed smarmy and ridiculously happy with his own cleverness. Lowrey's new band, Cracker, has the potential to be even more annoying, since the quartet places the spotlight solely on its leader and songwriter, but its self-titled 1992 debut was a strong effort with a smart, infectious single ("Teen Angst"), and Kerosene Hat is even better. Recorded with stripped- down simplicity on an abandoned soundstage at the edge of the Mojave desert, the album concentrates on the band's undeniably catchy country-flavored garage punk. "Go For A Ride" is perfect highway music, and the single "Low" is almost as good as "Teen Angst." Unfortunately, the most inspired title and song topic-"Hi Desert Biker Meth Lab"-turns out to be wasted on a short snippet of noise and studio chatter. --Jim DeRogatis

(em(em+6 and em7 embellishments) throughout)
This is a story about a dog, a dog
When I ride my bike
And my hair is blowing straight back
I think of you wearing that brown mohair sweater
Soft mounds of breasts underneath
Or better yet one of those squigly aluminum lawn chairs
I'm putting sun tan lotion on your long legs
A-wearing a broad rim straw hat
Pair of mickey mouse sunglasses
Looking just like lolita
Looking just like lolita
White sheets hanging on the line
White sheets blowing in the wind
A satellite dish pointed straight up at the heavens
