Black Mountain - Bicycle Man

Artist: Black Mountain

Song: Bicycle Man

Album: Druganaut (2005)

Time to rejoice space travellers, music lovers, drug takers and all freak creatures of the nightime world. The heat is on and the streets are wild. We've had enough of your modern music and fake painted smiles. We're all looking for a little more. Big amps, small amps, it's all the same. Dee-lite said that groove is in the heart. But we believe that rock'n'roll is boiled in the blood and born in the soul. What more do you want? What more do you need? Distractions? Interstellar cellular progress? Better killing machines?

The extended version of Druganaut is much better than the one on the full length and the two new songs are great (one of this, Bicycle Man, is from the split 7" with Destroyer. I reccomend this to anyone who already has the full lenght Black Mountain album.

About Bicycle Man:

…"Bicycle Man" struck me as a partic. jagged boy-girl vocal cut that got my finger hit the repeat button more than a dozen times throughout the end of last summer. Great for (fantasizing about) running down bicycle riders, ha ha. Seriously, a fine little chugging tribute to Blue Cheer.

…Black Mountain fuse together the Kinks and the Stooges in “Bicycle Man,” the catchy-as-hell single that should have been on their debut album for the complete package but instead is in a limited edition, tough-to-find 7” which you really need to track down. Expressive and effortlessly rockin’, this is where Black Mountain hits its stride, loosely and confidently strutting out a creeper singalong, one side of wax that’s as perfect as you could hope. White vinyl. Get a copy before eBay gets yours.

David LaMotte - I Believe In Ghosts

Artist: David LaMotte

Song: Bicycle Man

Album: Hard Earned Smile (2001)

David LaMotte is a singer-songwriter currently based in Black Mountain and Montreat, North Carolina. His work includes original folk music, children's music, lectures and workshop leading, and peacemaking. He currently divides his time between touring and a non-profit corporation he created to aid Guatemalan schools.

“David LaMotte's music is just incredible. I've experienced it live several times -- which is the best, of course. But this album continues to take my breath away. Such a wondrous variety of moods expressed, from the pensive and introspective Dark and Deep to the daily life reality of Hard Earned Smile and the silly self-reflection of Stupid in Love (one of the most unique and enjoyable love songs of all time -- in my humble opinion!). I can lose myself in LaMotte's music in general, but this disk really lets me lose myself in the music while always recognizing myself in the words.”

Eighty-three years and some thirty-year-old

Says that I'm not safe in a car on the road
I remember the first car that came to this town
Oh the changes I have seen
But this bike and this body will still get me there
If I keep them both in good repair
They can't take away my bicycle license
I'll ride 'til my days are through

I'm the Bicycle Man
It's true that you never forget
I'm the Bicycle Man
And my travelling days
Are not over yet

There isn't much hair for the wind to blow
But no one can say that I'm getting slow
And I'll sing just to hear my voice sound funny
In the gravel parking lot
All the kids on the block like to ride with me
I can skid in the dirt and sometimes pop a wheelie
It's almost dark soon they'll have to go in
But I can ride all night if I want to

I'm the Bicycle Man
It's true that you never forget
I'm the Bicycle Man
And my travelling days
Are not over yet

It's strange how it all comes back around
Like my wheels on the road as I ride through this town
I rode my bike home from my very first kiss
And here I am again

I'm the Bicycle Man
It's true that you never forget
I'm the Bicycle Man
And my travelling days
Are not over yet

John Ralston - I Believe In Ghosts

Artist: John Ralston

Song: I Believe In Ghosts

Album: Needle Bed (2006)

John Ralston obviously loves power pop and melodies, so what could be better than combining the two for a truly stellar debut album? Fans of everyone from Eliott Smith to XTC would be wise to remember the name.

I believe in ghosts and don’t believe in God.
Like I believe in the sum, but not the part.
Except when I’m riding my bicycle home from work
In the dark into oncoming traffic.

Maybe I’ll think it over again.

Sweetheart, baby,
I’m sorry for bringing these black clouds wherever you are.

These icebergs never stop melting.
I think that you fell for me in the dark.
Nervous knees knocking on the balance beam.
Circling sharks grinning up at me.
Well maybe I’m not all that you think I am. Maybe I am.

Maybe I am thinking it over again.

Sweetheart, baby,
I’m sorry for bringing these black clouds wherever you are.

These icebergs never stop melting.
I think that you fell for me in the dark.
But it’s over now, and you’re feeling so relieved.

If I believe in ghosts and don’t believe in God.
Then I believe in the sum, but not the part.
Jumpin’ Jack Pumpkinhead pincushion doll
I’m dead with all the things I never said buried in my flower bed.

Maybe I’ll think it over again next time

Just because I don't say anything
Doesn't mean I don't like you.
I open my mouth and I try and i try
But no words come out.

Without 40 ounces of social skills
I'm just an ass in the crack of humanity.
I'm just a huge manitee.
A huge manitee.

And besides you're probably holding hands
With some skinny, pretty girl that likes to
Talk about bands, and
All I wanna do is ride
bikes with you
And stay up late and watch cartoons.

Duck Tales, shirt tails, Talespin, Sailor Moon, GI Joe, Robotech, Ron Jeremy, Schmoo.

I wanna watch cartons with you.
Josie and the Pussycats and Scooby Do,
I want you to watch cartoons with me.
He-man, Voltron and Hong-Kong-Fui

I tried to ask you to your face,
But no words came out.
I put on my hood and walked away.
That doosn't mean I don't like you.

And besides you're probably holding hands
With some
skinny, pretty girl that likes to
Talk about bands, and
All I wanna do is ride bikes with you
And stay up late and maybe spoon.

Just becase I dont say anything
Doesn't mean I dont like you, no.
I opened my mouth and i tried and i tried.

And besides you're probably holding hands
With some skiny, pretty girl that likes to
Talk about bands and
All I wanna do is ride bikes with you
And stay up late and maybe spoon.

I'm just your average Thundercats ho.

Mùm - Slow Bicycle

Artist: Mùm

Song: Slow Bicycle

Album: Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today is OK (2000)

From Iceland, a long instrumental suite by Mùm: "Slow Bicycle" is the last track of their debut album, "Yesterday Was Dramatic," the year was 2000. Almost 9 minutes of minimal electronic produced from a wide range of instruments and obtained by environment sampling and by replacing the drums sounds including the clink of cutlery or the sound of doors that open and close.

Its sounds like some kind of background music to being on a fairytale version of the moon.

The Lucksmiths - The Green Bicycle Case

Artist: The Lucksmiths

Album: The Green Bicycle Case (2008)

The Green Bicycle Case involved the killing of a young woman named Bella Wright in Little Stretton, near Leicester, England on 5 July 1919. Wright was shot in the head; according to reports at the time, a raven was also found dead at the scene. The leading suspect Ronald Light (34 years old at the time) was tried, but acquitted. The best-known book on the case, The Green Bicycle Murder (1993) by C. Wendy East concludes that Light did, indeed, murder her. The earlier The Green Bicycle Case (1930) by H.R. Wakefield came to the opposite conclusion

With First Tape and Boondoggle under their belts, the Lucksmiths approached their first real album, per se, with well-deserved confidence and came up trumps. Named after a notorious murder from some 100 years previous, The Green Bicycle Case again showcases the band's virtue for getting things done without wasting time -- 12 songs in just over half an hour, nearly all of them winners. The recording quality isn't all that different from Boondoggle and neither is the general presentation -- the minimal arrangements give all that's needed song for song, while the extra touches (mandolin here, bodhran there) add a bit of flair without distracting from the songs themselves. White's performances seem to get better and better on each album -- his lead turn on "Motorscooter" is really inviting and compelling, for all that he sings once again in a light tone of voice. As for his drumming, there hasn't been a better worker of a minimal setup in years -- he never needs to pound and often refrains from playing entirely -- while he's not bad on the occasional recorder turn either. Donald's guitar playing (and fine lyrics: he wrote them for all but one of the songs) and Monnones bass conjure up one delightful song after another -- it's seemingly effortless, but that does them a disservice to how well they avoid repeating themselves. It's no surprise based on hearing such songs as "From Here to Maternity," the punning title disguising a sharp portrait of a woman about to give birth without the father around, and "Thomas and Martha," detailing, in surprisingly affecting fashion, the tale of a hangman who put a woman to death, that Belle & Sebastian proclaimed themselves fans. Yet somehow the Lucksmiths just have that much more going for them, something truly inviting and affecting that reaches beyond the Scottish group's studied classicism. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

Punkreas - Family Gay

Artist: Punkreas

Song: Family Gay

Album: Futuro Imperfetto (2008)

Punkreas are the best punk band known in Italy. Active from fifteen years. Their lyrics, always protest with a brilliant touch of irony crazy and sharp, have the capacity to be easily absorbed and metabolised by listeners.

"Family Gay", from the last album “Futuro Imperfetto” is the sad story of an orphan boy who can not be adopted by a homosexual couple. Clear anticlerical reference.

E dopo molte sere
Passate a dir preghiere
Arriva il grande giorno
Qualcuno che mi adotterà
La direttrice attende
La coppia che mi salverà
Di mamme non ne vedo
Però ci sono due papà

io me ne vado via da qua
preparo la valigia
solo un ricordo resterà
di questa stanza grigia

Ma all’improvviso che grande delusione
Non è prevista questa combinazione
La suora mi bisbiglia “che orribile peccato
Torna a pregare, sarai più fortunato”

Anche per oggi resto qua
disfando la valigia
e quello che mi resterà
è questa stanza grigia
anche per oggi resto qua
ma nella mia preghiera
in croce al posto di Gesù
ci metterò la suora
