The latest member of the burgeoning artists' braintrust sixtyonesixtyeight , low rider bicycle is the creation of Matt Knoth, a guitarist, producer and engineer usually associated with traditional american musics (The Mercury Dimes; All Wrecked Up).

Approached by independant documentary filmakers Per Erik Eriksson and Liam Dalzell in 2000, Knoth began creating soundscapes and tracks for Eriksson's many film projects. Flyover Statesman represents the very best of those endeavors.

Part ambient anxiety-scape, part waking hobo-erotic dream, Knoth is joined on flyover statesman by veteran illbient musicians Bob Green (the Grassy Knoll), Peter Beddow (Absorption), Elise Engelberg (The Mercury Dimes) and Dave Revelli (Jewel, Vicious Hippies, the Grassy Knoll).

If you like Lanois or Eno, you'll probably dig this CD.

Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. That’s gotta be one of he best band names of all time.Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. It’s so satisfying to say. It’s almost as satisfying to type out, time and again. Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. The best thing about the name is that it’s wholly accurate: Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra are a troop of musicians based in a certain district of Manchester who come together to make music from all kinds of instruments, including bicycles. They’ve been a going concern for a few years now, but this is their debut release; a full-length CD album (or download if you’re so inclined) capturing nine of their collective improvisations for posterity and general confusion.

“Marlon. Marlon Brando are you the famous film star?”

And he says, “yes I’m afraid I am.”

“Why aren’t you happy with your existence?”

“Well that’s the question isn’t it?”

Confusion? Yes. It’s not like they don’t warn you: open up the beautifully packaged CD, pull out the bonkers fold-out poster and look on the back; you’re confronted with what reads like the ramblings of an insane man and a small disclaimer: “All lyrics improvised at time of recording and sung by Zeke S Clough”. Pity the fool that volunteered to transcribe them.

Zeke S. Clough (voice, synthesizer, percussion), perhaps better known for his insane artwork for Skull Disco that also adorns this release, is just one of the quartet of fearless improvisers that make up Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra. Huw T. Wahl (bicycle percussion, clarinet, piano, voice), David M. (for Magnus) Birchall (bass, small instruments, percussion, voice) and Josh J. Kopecek (synthesizer, piano, flugelhorn) are the other constituent parts that make up this glorious whole.

So what is the sound of confusion? The album opens up with some typically deranged moans from Zeke, before some clattering of bicycle percussion, fizzing pedals and rhythmic random percussion. This builds up to a point of tension before Zeke begins his first sermon, quickly accompanied by bass thrums and other assorted layers before it all collapses into the next song. “Starved Dog” features a piano accompanying what sounds like someone playing a bass guitar with a slide, a kazoo and god knows what else. “Oily Film” features what sounds like the ghost of crazed organist playing the soundtrack toChopper Chicks in Zombietown, accompanied by creaks, groans and moans and the odd whoop here and there. “Whale in a Duckpond” almost sounds like an actual, recognisable song at various points, with some welcome musicality as David plays the bass like an upright and Zeke croons in his best Geno Washington impersonation. Then it all goes wrong; maggots start crawling over the windows and hell gradually breaks loose. “Marlon Brando”? Well, you know how that one goes. Everything starts falling apart by the time we reach “Primate Engineer” and Huw’s clarinet starts wailing over the top of abstract piano phrases, phased bass rumbles and some beatboxing. Eventually it all comes to a crashing, triumphant halt with final track “Nine Doors”, which runs a full 20 minutes and encapsulates virtually everything that precedes it, mutating from broken-down church organ jam to skeletal percussion workout to bizarre melody hopscotch, all held together by another bizarre, nonsensical story. A glorious hymn to the power of collective free improvisation, it’s probably the finest moment on this fantastically cock-eyed album.

“Nine Doors” is the sound of what happens when you lock four like-minded musical voyagers in a room for 2 days and distill their inevitable improvisations down to something that approaches the coherent “music” your lazy brain desires. Live, Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra must sprawl all over the place as they take different paths towards collective enlightenment. On record, you’re served the mere highlights of their wanderings, jumbled-up and thrown together to create this mind-flaying assemblage of sounds, textures, noises, words and song. Running nicely over an hour, it might be too much to take in at one sitting, but keep listening and it’s the collective inspiration that frazzles your mind. Awesomely inspired and dazzlingly weird, simply nothing sounds like Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra.

LBO are out in the mainland of Europe right now blowing minds night after night. If you’re anywhere near anywhere they’re playing, I suggest you take a trip and check them out:

Desperate Bicycles - Cars

The Desperate Bicycles were an English punk group who released a series of independent recordings in the late 1970s and inspired many other bands to do likewise. The Desperate Bicycles pioneered the do-it-yourself ethic of punk, adopting a proselytising role exemplified by their ardent exhortation: "it was easy, it was cheap - go and do it!". The group have been described as "DIY's most fervent evangelists"

The music of the Desperate Bicycles has been described as: “Spindly, fuzzy, guttural guitars through puny amplifiers, reedy, wheezy organs, out of tune electric pianos, cardboard box drums and monotonous declamatory yet somehow utterly reasonable sounding vocals”. Another reviewer described them as “a shambling wreck of a psychedelic post-punk band”. The writer Simon Reynolds states that the group's music "was almost puritan in its unadorned simplicity, its guitar sound frugal to the point of emaciation".

Desperate Bicycles - The Medium Was Tedium

Formed in Dalston East London during March 1977, the Desperate Bicycles were one of the first bands to seriously aspire to the DIY recording ethic that punk had sent into overdrive. They took one stage further Mark Perry's 3 chord call to action and showed groups could have total artistic control. A concept later taken up by bands like Crass.

This is the second single.

The drummer and guitarist had left the band soon after the recording of the "Smokescreen" single, with the drummer being replaced by Dave Papworth, then aged 14 years. The new line-up went back to the studio in June 1977 and recorded another two songs, "The Medium was Tedium" and "Don't Back the Front". The second single was released in February 1978 in a pressing of 1,000 and sold out in a week. "The Medium was Tedium" incorporates "it was easy, it was cheap - go and do it!" as a refrain, urging others to follow the band’s example. "Don't Back the Front" contains the lines: "cut it, press it, distribute it / Xerox music's here at last". For the Desperate Bicycles 'do-it-yourself' "meant the overthrow of the establishment music industry through people seizing the means of production, making their own entertainment, and selling it to other creative and autonomous spirits". With the profit from their second single the group pressed a further 2,500 copies of each of their singles, and also purchased some more equipment

In March 1977 the Desperate Bicycles booked a studio at Dalston in East London to record their first single. The band possessed only an amp and a bass-guitar and the studio supplied the other instruments and equipment; "with a lot of courage and a little rehearsal" they recorded two songs, “Smokescreen” and “Handlebars”. The first record was released in August 1977 as an edition of 500 pressings on the band’s own Refill Records label. The records cost £153 to produce, which comprised the three hours studio time, the price of pressing and the sleeves. The record was unusual in that it featured the same tracks on both sides and was a mono recording. The song "Handlebars" ends with the Desperate Bicycles' strident DIY rallying cry "it was easy, it was cheap - go and do it!". Roger Stephens and Danny Wrigley hawked the “Smokescreen” single around the small independent record shops, and distributors such as Virgin and Rough Trade. The first pressing sold out within four months resulting in a profit to the band of £210. Using this money a second pressing of 1,000 was made, which sold out in a fortnight.

Small Brown Bike (The Band)

Small Brown Bike was a band from Marshall, Michigan that existed between 1996 and 2004. The band was sparked from an earlier band Help! The Lookout started by former front man Mike Reed, and his brother, Bass player Ben Reed the band consisted of 80's guitar like riffs and melodic style vocals. The trademark of Small Brown Bike this four-piece is "double vocals" backed by melodies. Their sound is often identified as being similar to other post-hardcore bands--often Small Brown Bike's close contemporaries--such as Avail, Hot Water Music and Dillinger Four. Their last show was in 2004 at The Fireside Bowl in Chicago, after already agreeing to split up. Former members Mike Reed and Dan Jaquint later created the band La Salle, with Reed's wife playing bass guitar. Ben Reed is now the singer in the Great Sea Serpents based out of Chicago, IL.

The band name is derived from their working experience as bike mechanics.

The band announced a return to songwriting on October 6, 2009.

Wilkinson Tri-Cycle - Tri Cycle

This obscure power trio is thought to have come from Boston, where they supported the Velvet Underground in 1969, the same year their sole LP appeared. An inspired blend of tough electric blues (Leavin' Trunk , Antique Locomotives), commercial songs with distinctive hooks (What Of I?, Pourscha Poe) and more overtly acid-influenced material (David's Rush, Yellow Wall), it's an overlooked psychedelic gem that deserves far wider recognition.

Their music covered a range of styles - heavy rock, blues and pop-rock with a dash of psychedelia. They had a unique sound. (…) Wilkinson Tri-Cycle remains a mystery. The notes indicate they may have been from the Boston area and played with The Velvet Underground at the Boston Tea Party March 13-15, 1969. That's it.

Singer/songwriter Kurt Liebert is the main force behind Bicycle, a musical project he began after he was laid off from his job at a New York pharmaceuticals company. Liebert took the opportunity to ride his bicycle across the country and play impromptu gigs with his collaborator Forrest Burtnette, which led to the band's name.

Bicycle's unique manner of transportation attracted media attention and grants from a few music colleges, and Liebert moved to Seattle to focus on his music. This resulted in the 1999 self-titled debut album, which featured contributions from Burtnette and former Presidents of the United States member Chris Ballew, who produced five songs on the album, and also provided background vocals. ~ Heather Phares, All Music

Bicycle's 1999 self-titled debut mixes bouncy pop melodies, quirky lyrics, heavy guitars and hip-hop beats into 14 entertaining and catchy sonic collages. The Bicycles Thieves - Stolen Moments

This new release from Road Goes On Forever Records represents a first in more ways than one: not only are The Bicycle Thieves our first local signing since our move to the North East, but The Bicycle Thieves are also the label's first jazz act.

An acoustic trio led by guitarist Alistair Robinson, aided and abetted by Martin Bloomfield on bass and percussionist extraordinaire Roger Hempsall, The Bicycle Thieves have established a solid reputation on the local upmarket gig circuit, performing at such prestigious local venues as Throwing Stones restaurant at The National Glass Centre in Sunderland and the local gourmet paradise known as 11, Tavistock Place.

Formed in 1997 by Robinson (by day a local newspaper journalist) and Bloomfield, who initially performed as a duo, earlier this year they recruited seasoned session musician Hempsall, whose past credits include Jeff Beck, Pete King and Shirley Bassey (among many others), since when they have expanded both their repertoire and their horizons, which the release of this debut album confirms. Alistair Robinson is also a gifted composer, and has either written or co-written (with Martin Bloomfield) nine of the 14 tracks here. The balance of the tracks are cover versions of notable tunes written by the likes of Cole Porter, Michel Legrand, Pat Metheny and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

The group name, The Bicycle Thieves, was borrowed from the celebrated Italian film of the 1950s, and has no other significance - this trio do not steal bicycles - but Martin Bloomfield, as well as dispensing excellent bass lines, is actually also adept at riding a unicycle, and has been known to combine both his skills, playing bass while wobbling back and forth. Roger Hempsall, who is also a music lecturer and actor, has played on scores of albums during his distinguished career, and brings a wealth of experience and professionalism to the band.

Road Goes On Forever Records founder John Tobler notes "What interested us about The Bicycle Thieves was the fact that they play tastefully, use a lot of original material, and above all are different - their influences include flamenco music, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery and Pat Metheny, and the label has never released anything like this before. We don't expect world domination before Christmas, but we are hopeful that this tuneful and melodic music will open ears and eyes which have previously ignored jazz".

The seeds were planted for ROOTS AND WISDOM music in Nigeria West Africa, where Wisdom Ogbor was born and where he began early in his life to lead singing groups in his schools' cultural and religious festivities. According to Wisdom, songs began to form in his head in those early childhood days, and the presence of the songs inside his being always moved him to search for forums to present the songs.

It came to pass that when Wisdom's parents sent him to study in a university in the United States of America , Wisdom became heavily influenced by access to music from all over the world which competed for listenership in the USA . In New York City and Washington DC , Wisdom began collaborating and writing music with African American musicians, Brazilians, Jamaicans, Cubans and African musicians who came for summer tours in the United States . A stint as a Disc Jockey on a popular Dallas Texas radio station raised people's confidence in Wisdom and he began getting booked in local venues with his own band. He toured all over the USA and settled in Austin Texas, where he became involved with bicycle activism.

Wisdom's bicycle projects took him to Mexico and Central America in late 1999 as the head of a group that transported more than 100 bicycles for use in poor communities there in the so called La Ruta Maya. He took along with him his guitar and tapes of his old music which were recorded in Africa, in Ghana and Nigeria , and also in the United States . In Mexico people quickly took a liking to Wisdom`s music and musicians there readily gave their support to him to play his music and show him a true Mexican hospitality. That experience encouraged Wisdom to write several songs in Spanish which appeared on the CD BICYCLES FOR RASTAS MAYAS. He also writes and sings in two Nigerian languages, (Ibo and Yoruba), and in English.

Wisdom's band ROOTS AND WISDOM plays in the tourist zones of Mexico, in Central America, and in the United States of America . In Mexico and Central America , the group is well tested with the presence of international tourists from all over the world who regularly party with ROOTS AND WISDOM and take the music home with them to their different parts of the world.

A friend with a recording studio in San Cristobal de Las Casas in Chiapas Mexico , gave Wisdom cheap studio time and together with other musician friends from the USA , Haiti , Mexico and Europe, they began recording new songs from the " Latin America Experience". These songs, with old music which were recorded in Africa and in the USA , were remixed to make this CD, BICYCLES FOR RASTAS MAYAS (From Africa to the Land of the Mayas).

The history of Try Me Bicycle dates back to the fall of 2005, when we first met up to play through some material Andy had been working on. It was nothing serious, but the connection felt great from end to end, so we just kept working on material as Andy made it available. Eventually, we had mustered a live set’s worth of songs and began scheduling shows locally in our hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. Following one of those performances, we came in contact with songwriter/producer Michael Krassner (Patrick Park, Califone, Boxhead Ensemble, Simon Joyner). Michael wanted to record and produce the quartet and, given Michael’s reputation, we were ecstatic with such an offer. In November of 2006 we started recording and have since finished our first record together entitled “Voicings.”

Andrea Hendel grew up playing violin and attended the Manhattan School of Music for five years. She started playing bass after meeting Kean through roller derby. Hendel's classical background, evident in her melodic & flowing bass lines, serves the pop-rock format of the band perfectly. Bryan Nelson is a seasoned and respected Austin musician/engineer who has worked at Austin's Sweatbox Studio for the past twelve years. He also currently plays drums for The Snake Trap, and guitar for Gorch Fock.
