Paul Sachs - Stolen Bicycles

Artist: Paul Sachs

Song: Stolen Bicycles

Album: The Refuge (2009)

Paul Sachs

Stolen Bicycles
In the summertime it’s 1983
There’s a heat wave in the city
And it’s barrelin’ down upon you and me
Banana seats and handle bars
Riding in between the cars
With you
Sidewalk flying ‘neath our feet
Burning down the NY street
We flew
on our
Stolen Bicycles

Stolen Bicycles
In the rhythm of the public city schools
Where we cut the classes in our jeans
We broke the rules
Yellow sneakers purple hair
It was fun to ride nowhere with you
We didn’t care the damage done it was still a lot of fun
It’s true on our
Stolen Bicycles

Stolen Bicycle in my living room
But I bought it used and cheap
Off some kid on a corner and it’s missing a few spokes
And a seat
I remember I recall
It seemed like we stole them all
We flew
And from my youth of minor crimes
I Still get the urge sometimes
Its true
To ride a Stolen Bicycle
Gonna ride a Stolen Bicycle

Danny Elfman - Stolen Bike

Artist: Danny Elfman

Song: Stolen Bike

Album: Theme From Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

This fantastic theme fits perfectly with the whimsical, classic tale of a boy and his bike. Madcap and iconic work by Danny Elfman for anyone who ever truly loved their bike as a best friend.

Danny Elfman was originally the frontman of art punk band Oingo Boingo, who had a hit with the title song to the movie Weird Science. Later he became better known as the guy who wrote the theme to The Simpsons, as well as composing soundtracks for many other popular TV shows and films. The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo were formed as a musical theatre group in 1972 by Richard Elfman, before they became the influential new wave band known simply as Oingo Boingo, fronted by Richard's younger brother Danny. They were best known commercially for their hit song "Weird Science", from the film of the same name and their fourth album Dead Man's Party. Boingo broke up in 1995, but Danny Elfman was already well on his way to becoming a popular and acclaimed film composer, working closely with many famous film directors most notably Tim Burton (…)

Ox - Stolen Bike

Artist: Ox

Song: Stolen Bike

Album: Dust Bowl Revival (2003)

Music

From the long, hard running American interstate comes the latest incarnation of alt-country anti-hero Mark Browning. With disdain for the singer-songwriter stereotype and a spirit of collaboration, the collective 'OX', has become Browning's new voice for the deconstructed pop song and the anthem of the musically disenfranchised. The concept is plain, reflect the hardness of this land, the spirit of the folks living on it, and blow it out like diesel exhaust. After all, it's only rock & roll. The debut OX: DUST BOWL REVIVAL (to be released December, 2002) is a collection of studio weary fragments, fragile masterpieces, sonic accidents; a candid album in the truest sense. Recorded live to analog tape and spliced cassette demo recordings made across the mid-west, DUST BOWL REVIVAL is literally, a record of a record; a behind the scenes look at recording an album. Production, exposed; a musical affirmation that the air in the room is part of the song, that space is part of the song, that the musical scaffolds of count-ins and tube-amp hum are part of the song... that the song, is only a part of the song.

"Headlining Vancouver songman OX plies a sensitive but scuffed, delicate but twisted variant on the cracked alt-country thing. On the evidence of a forthcoming album, 'DUST BOWL REVIVAL' he is a significant talent." Ross
Fortune, TIME OUT, LONDON UK

Apparently, Ox really enjoyed that song and its chord progression, since they wrote new words for it and created "Stolen Bike", which comes a few songs later. Maybe Kanye West, Jay-Z, or the Beatles are allowed to refer to other songs they wrote, and preferably songs from prior albums, but Ox has not earned that right. It is appalling that they either expect the audience to not notice that "Stolen Bike" is the same as "Stolen Car" -- just sped up -- or worse but more probable, that they do expect the audience to notice, and to find it terribly clever or interesting. That said, with its robust drum beat and its foot-tapping chorus, the song is easier to digest than "Stolen Car", so maybe the solution would have been to get rid of the first song.

Owen - Stolen Bike

Artist: Owen

Song: Stolen Bike

Album: The Seaside EP (2009)

The Seaside EP is a rarities release by Chicago artist Owen.

"Stolen Bike" – also a Japanese bonus track from At Home With Owen - is a cover of the Bruce Springsteen song "Stolen Car" from the album "The River".

i met a little girl and i settled down
in a little house out on the edge of town
we got married, we swore we'd never part
then little by little we drifted from each other's hear
at first i thought it was just restlessness
that would fade as time went by and our love grew deep
but in the end there was more i guess
that tore us apart and made us weep
i'm riding a stolen bike
up and down Damon Avenue
each night i wait to get caught
but i never do
she asked if i remembered those letters i wrote
when our love was young and bold
she said last night she read those letters
and they made her feel one hundred years old
i'm riding a stolen bike
on a pitch black night
i keep telling myself it's gonna be alright
but i ride by night and i travel in fear
that in this darkness i will disappear

Bill Jenkins - There Is No Lord Up There

Artist: Bill Jenkins

Song: There Is No Lord Up There

Album: Life (1995)

Billy Jenkins is a blues guitarist, composer.

Band-leader, composer, (one-time rehearsal room manager) teacher and guitarist, Billy Jenkins is now in his fifth decade of music making which began with rehearsals in his parent's basement. Billy's early musical experiences were shared with best friend Bill Broad, who he introduced to the music of Frank Zappa, Velvet Underground and Sonny Rollins. They parted ways at 18: Billy heading off "to be a musician"and Broad changing his name to Idol, with the ambition "to be a star".

American readers will be baffled by him; but he is, along with the Princess Royal and Walthamstow dog stadium, one of our national treasures.' Penguin Guide To Jazz On CD

When I was five or six
my grandma fell down a flight of stairs
when I was five or six
my dear grandma fell down a flight of stairs
I knew there and then
that there is no Lord up there

When I was eight or nine
my big sister got attacked
when I was eight or nine
my big sister got attacked
so when Jehovah come selling religion
I sell the blues right back

I had just turned twelve
when some bastard stole my bicycle
I had just turned twelve
when some bastard stole my bicycle
blood drain from my face
heart like an icicle

Yes there is no Lord up there
ask my Grandma, my sister or my bike
yes there is no Lord up there
ask my Grandma, my sister or my bike
yes there is no Lord up there

OH NO...........!

Lauryn Hill - Every Ghetto, Every City

Artist: Lauryn Hill

Song: Every Ghetto, Every City

Album: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill has minor references to youth on a BMX bike and bike theft in this song by Hill gone solo from Fugees and Wyclef Jean.

review

I was just a little girl
Skinny legs, a press and curl
My mother always thought I'd be a star
But way before my record deal,
The streets that nurtured Lauryn Hill
Made sure that I'd never go too far
Every ghetto, every city and suburban place I've been
Make me recall my days in the New Jerusalem
Story starts at Hootaville grew up next to Ivy Hill
When kids were stealing quartervilles for fun
"Kill the guy" in Carter park
Rode a Mongoose 'til it's dark
Watching kids show off the stolen ones
Every ghetto, every city and suburban place I've been
Make me recall my days in New Jerusalem

You know it's hot, don't forget what you've got
Looking back,
Looking back, looking back, looking back
You know it's hot, don't forget what you've got
Looking back
Thinking back, thinking back, thinking back

A bag of Bontons, twenty cents and a nickel
Springfield Ave. had the best popsicles
Saturday morning cartoons and Kung-Fu
Main street roots tonic with the dreds
A beef patty and some coco bread
Move the patch from my Lees to the tongue of my shoe
'Member Frelng-Huysen used to have the bomb leather
Back when Doug Fresh and Slick Rick were together
Looking at the crew, we thought we'd all live forever

You know it's hot, don't forget what you've got
Looking back
Thinking back, thinking back, thinking back
You know it's hot, don't forget what you've got
Looking back
Thinking back, thinking back, thinking back

Drill teams on Munn street
Remember when Hawthorne and Chancellor had beef
Moving Records was on Central Ave.
I was there at dancing school
South Orange Ave. at Borlin pool
Unaware of what we didn't have
Writing your friends' names on your jeans with a marker

July 4th races off of Parker
Fireworks at Martin stadium
The Untouchable P.S.P., where all them crazy niggers be
And car thieves got away through Irvington
Hillside brings beef with the cops
Self-Destruction record drops
And everybody's name was Muslim
Sensations and '88 attracted kids from out-of-state
And everybody used to do the wop
Jack, Jack, Jack ya body
Nah, the Biz Mark used to amp up the party
I wish those days, they didn't stop
Every ghetto, every city and suburban place I've been
Make me recall my days in New Jerusalem

You know it's hot, don't forget what you've got
Looking back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
You know it's hot, don't forget what you've got
Looking back
Thinking back, thinking back, thinking back

Thinking back, thinking back, thinking back

St. Vincent - Bicycle

Artist: St. Vincent

Song: Bicycle

Two years ago, Annie Clark’s recorded debut as St. Vincent, ‘Marry Me’, gave immediate notice that a dizzying new talent had emerged from the flatlands of Texas. Critics from all points of the cultural compass—from Pitchfork to Spin to the New York Times Magazine—were entranced by the album’s precocious arrangements and elegant lyrics, and the steadily growing crowds at St. Vincent’s live shows were astonished by Clark’s gargantuan musical chops and her magnetic stage presence. No small number of St. Vincent fans took the title of ‘Marry Me’ literally, had their hearts duly broken, and wouldn’t have had it any other way. The record was heralded as a remarkably successful entrance and Clark capped a year of international touring by winning the Plug Awards’ Female Artist of the Year. more

Bicycle is the b-side of the single “Actor Out of Work”..

You stole my bicycle so i had to walk 20 city blocks in the rain
You took my tennis shoes so i took the train to avoid the rain
You saw me on the street you offered me a seat then when i blinked you w

Eminem - Yellow Brick Road

Artist: Eminem

Song: Yellow Brick Road

Album: Encore (2004)

A protégé of Dr. Dre, rapper Eminem emerged in 1999 as one of the most controversial rappers to ever grace the genre.

Eminem's fourth album offers few surprises, but still enough pleasures to carry the day. As evinced by Em's pre-election, pro-voting "Mosh," this is not exactly the same Eminem who seemingly crapped on anything and everything. Encore finds a surprisingly mature Eminem waxing reflective about his battle with Benzino ("Like Toy Soldiers") rather than unloading both barrels. However, it's not all elder statesmanship: "Puke" goes after his ex-wife Kim with incredible scorn, and "Big Weenie" brings the familiar juvenile humor that made him famous. If Encore has a clear weakness, it's the bland production--the same plodding sound that he and Dr. Dre cooked up on the previous three albums. The exotic flavor of "Ass Like That" catches the ear, but many others run off the same monotonous minor-key melodies and tempos. Of course, people buy Eminem albums to hear him spit first and foremost, and, in that regard, few fans will be disappointed by Encore; it'd just be nice to see him switch up his sound at some point. --Oliver Wang

[Intro]
What we have to do is deal with it when these individuals are young enough. If you wish to be
saved, not in a religious sense but not to constitute what this country at times calls if or
which over. We seem to be approaching an age of the gross. We all have this idea that we should
move up from our parents station and each generation should do a little bit better.

[Verse 1- Eminem]
Come on, let's cut the bullshit enough
Let's get it started, let's start addressing this issue and open it up
Let's take this shit back to basement
And we can discuss statements thats made on this tape
And its whole origin of the music that we all know and love
The music that we all enjoy the music you all accuse me of tryna destroy
Let's rewind it to 89 when I was a boy on the east side of Detroit
Crossing 8 Mile into Warren, into hick territory
I'd like to share a story, this is my story and cant no body tell it for me
You will well inform me, I am well aware that I don't belong here
You've made that perfectly clear, I get my ass kicked damn near everywhere
From Bel-Air shopping center just for stopping in there
From the black side all the way to the white side
OK there's a bright side a day that I might slide
You may call it a past I call it hauling my ass
Through that patch of grass over them railroad tracks
Oh them railroad tracks, them old railroad tracks
Them good old notorious oh well known tracks

[Chorus x2]
So lets go back
Follow the yellow brick road as we go on another episode
Journey with me as I take you through this nifty little place
I once used to call home sweet home

[Verse 2- Eminem]
I roam the streets so much they call me a drifter
Sometimes I stick up a thumb just to hitch hike
Just to get picked up to get me a lift to 8 mile and Van Dyke
And steal a god damn bike from somebody's backyard
And drop it off at the park that was the half way mark
To meet Kim had to walk back to her mama's on Chalmers after dark
To sneak me in the house when I'm kicked out my mom's
Thats about the time I first met Proof with Goofy Gary on the steps
At Osbourne handing out some flyers, he was doing some talent shows
At Centerline High, I had told him to stop by and check this out sometime
He looked at me like I'm out my mind shook his head like white boys don't know how to rhyme
I spit out a line and rhymed birthday with first place
And we both had the same rhymes that sound alike
We was on the same shit that Big Daddy Kane shit with compound syllables sound combined
From that day we was down to ride somehow we knew we'd meet again somewhere down the line

[Chorus x2]
So lets go back
Follow the yellow brick road as we go on another episode
Journey with me as I take you through this nifty little place
I once used to call home sweet home

[Verse 3- Eminem]
My first year in 9th grade, can't forget that day at school
It was cool till your man MC Shan came through
And said that Puma's The Brand 'cause the clan makes troops
It was rumors but man, god damn, they flew
Must've been true because man we done banned they shoes
I had the new ones the Cool J, Ice land swayed too
And we just through them in the trash like they yesterday's news
Guess who came through next, X-clan debut
Professor X vanglorious exists in a state of red, black, and green
With a key sissies now with this being a new trend
We don't fit in crackers is out with Cactus albums
Blackness is in, African symbols and medallions
Represents black power and we ain't know what it meant
Me and my man Howard and Butter, we would go to the mall with 'em
All over our necks like we're showing 'em off not knowing at all
We was being laughed at you ain't even half black
You ain't supposed to have that homie let me grab that
And that Flavor Flave clock we gonna have to snatch that
All I remember is meeting back at Manix's basement
saying how we hate this, how racist but dope the x clan's tape is...
Which reminds me back in 89 me and Kim broke up for the first time
She was tryna two time me and there was this black girl
At our school who thought I was cool cause I rapped so she was kinda eyeing me
And oh the irony guess what her name was ain't even gonna say it plus
The same color hair as hers was and blue contacts and a pair of jugs
The bombest god damn girl in our whole school if I could pull it
Not only would I become more popular but I would be able to piss Kim off at the same time
But it backfired I was supposed to dump her but she dumped me for this black guy
And thats the last I ever seen or heard or spoke to the oh foolish pride girl
But I've heard people say they heard the tape and it ain't that bad
But it was I singled out a whole race and for that apologize
I was wrong cause no matter what color a girl is she's still a hoe

[Chorus x2]
So lets go back
Follow the yellow brick road as we go on another episode
Journey with me as I take you through this nifty little place
I once used to call home sweet home

Non capisco se tu
Pensi quello che dici
Io giocavo con te
Mi hai fottuto la bici
Ti ho fischiato ma tu
Pedalavi veloce
Ogni cane lo sai
Ha una zuppa che cuoce
Ogni estate noi due
Con la bici nei boschi
Io fumavo ma tu
Tu mangiavi le mosche
Il tuo pelo lo sai
Luccicava nel sole
Sei scappato da me
Tu mi hai fatto del male

Molti dicono che
La tua testa è malata
Ma una bici così
Tu l'hai tanto sognata
Mi dicevi che tu
Ti sentivi pilota
Con il senno di poi
Sono stato un idiota

Ohhh oh oh oh oh...

Non capisco se tu
Pensi quello che dici
Io giocavo con te
Mi hai fottuto la bici
Ti ho fischiato ma tu
Pedalavi veloce

The Decemberists - Apology Song

Artist: The Decemberists
Titolo:
Apology Song

Album: 5 songs (Ep, 2003)

5 Songs is a six-track EP by The Decemberists initially self-released by the band in 2001. The artwork was produced by Portland, Oregon artist Carson Ellis. The misleading title is due to the fact that the final track, "Apology Song" (originally sung into the answering machine of a friend named Steven as a legitimate apology for the loss of a beloved bicycle named Madeline), was written after the original self-produced CD was released. Lead singer Colin Meloy liked it so much that it was added to the album when it was re-released by Hush Records in 2003.

In 5 SONGS, which actually consists of six, Colin Meloy's uniquely wonderful vocals, masterful storytelling and intimidating vocabulary come to a head - and combined with accordionistas, violinists, and your standard guitar/percussion/bass, you'd be hardpressed to find indie folk rock that sounded fresher or more exciting than this.
The songs themselves are six different stories in the ever-eclectic yarn of the Decemberists, with subjects ranging from World War II love stories ("My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist") to a heartfelt apology (Apology Song) for losing a friend's bicycle… bicycle? I think if you listen closely the end reveals that not only was the bike stolen, but so was his girlfriend.

Apology song is a solid and cheerful song with the Decemberists' excellent combination of harmony, guitar, and organ.

I'm really sorry Steven
But your bicycle's been stolen
I was watchin' it for you
'Til you came back in the fall
Guess I didn't do such a good job after all

I was feeling really sorry Steven
And I spent all morning grieving
And everybody's saying
That you'll take the news gracefully
Somehow I don't think I'll be getting off that easily

I meant her no harm
When I left her unlocked
Outside the Orange Street Food Farm
I was just running in
Didn't think I'd be that long
I came out, she was gone
And all that was there was some bored old dog
Leashed up to the place where your bicycle had been
Guess we'll never see poor Madeleine again

Let this be consolation, Steven
That all the while you were in England
I treated her with care and respect
And gave her lots of love
And I was usually pretty good 'bout locking her up

Where has she gone?
Well, I bet she's on the bottom of the Frenchtown Pond
Rudely abused on some hescher's joyride
So I wrote you this song
In the hopes that you'd forgive me
Even though it was wrong
Being so careless with a thing so great
And taking your poor Madeleine away, away
